Question about Toshiba Laptop and 32/64 bit

This laptop comes with Windows XP 32 bit:

L450 : L450-EZ1543
»laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/sate···0-EZ1543

But the specs of the Processor say it's 64 bit

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T6670
»ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=42109

Will 32 bit programs run?

Thanks,

-rich

If you decide to run Windows Vista or 7 64-bit, 32-bit programs will run perfectly.

What about if I leave Win XP and don't install Win 7: will my 32 bit programs run on this 64 bit processor?

I'm not clear on this: I assumed that 32 bit programs would not run on a 64 bit system.

Thanks,

-rich

Like AMD - Intel CPUs that run 64 bit can also run 32 bit programs as well.

Seems to be a pretty common question, something that I get asked several times a day. You are good to go.

Thanks Kiwi See Profile and CylonRed See Profile.

In looking further into the specifications for that laptop, there is this:
Certain device drivers and/or applications may not be compatible with a 64-bit CPU and therefore may not function properly.

So, it seems that I can't know ahead of time if my Photoshop 7, for example, will run. Or, some old utilities from Win95 days but still work fine on my old WinXP 32-bit laptop with 32-bit Celeron CPU.

Certain device drivers and applications may not be compatible with a 64-bit Operating System. You might need the 64-bit versions, if say you get a new computer with a 64-bit version of Windows. (generally only found on systems that ship with more than 4Gb of memory)

But the 64-bit CPUs (atleast in the case of Intel and AMD) are ALL capable of handling 32-bit instructions. They are just also capable of handling 64-bit instructions.

With a 32-bit version of Windows, your software won't know or care that the CPU is 64-bit. Everything that runs on your current computer will run on the new one. (assuming the same version of Windows is on both)

99% of 32-bit programs will work on 64-bit Windows. The drivers is where it *can* get a little tricky, but usually not a big deal either.

Thanks - that explains it!

Download and run the Windows Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft. It will tell you what programs and/or hardware is not compatible with either Windows 7 version (32 or 64).
