 Motorola Vs Webstar

My moto surfboard is 6+ years old and I think it's time to upgrade as I have been having issues with it. TWC said they could send out a tech with one of their westar modem what should i do go out and buy a new modem of my choice or take the webstar from TWC.

For the most part a cable modem is a cable modem is a cable modem. Whether you get a Motorola or Scientific Atlanta they'll both get provisioned the same. Cable modems just sit there, there are no moving parts and as the end user there really isn't much in the way of customizations you can do.

Only time I ever had the urge to have a different modem was when I had a Linksys WRT54GS router, I wanted the Linksys Cable Modem since all Linksys products were of a common physical design and could be stacked one on top of the other making for a cleaner look. Now I have a dual band Linksys Wireless N router and it is a different form factor so it's a moot point.

Here TW hands out Ambit modems for regular and home networking customers and Scientific Atlanta's for phone subscribers.

I'd take the SA modem. There really is no point in buying your own. In the vast majority of TW franchises there is no discount if you buy your own, and some area's may even give you a hard time activating a purchased modem. Since TW doesn't change extra for the modem, and if there's an issue with it down the road it's their problem not yours, take whatever they give you.

If all is perfect, one modem will work as well as the next one. In the real world, though, some modems cope with signal imperfections better than others. The Motorola Surfboards (SB 51XX and 6120) tend to be the most robust models out there.
