 | Modern Warfare 2 How do you make yourself the host? |
|
 | Someone hasnt been following the news lately.
No more dedicated servers anymore. Which means you cannot be the host.
And this is where you go tell Activision/Infinity Ward...
UP YOURS!
But wait, you purchased MW2 already. To late for you. So anyhow, the only way to connect on PC is to use IW.net for your server needs. Good luck with that. |

What it does (I don't have the game) is you select a game type then you enter a lobby with players that want to play that game type as well. IWNet matches these players together then it selects a host that it determines will be the best choice. I am assuming it does a small packet tests to each candidate before selecting.
Once it finds the host the match starts. If that host leaves the game a new host within the current game is selected. During this time everyone waits... frozen from what I have been hearing. Up to 45 seconds.
The host could have an amazing upload speed, but if his machine can't handle the game I imagine you would all suffer as well, maybe not. But the host can disrupt game play just by uploading a large file or using another PC eating up bandwidth. Hell, he could probably even pull the cat5 cable in and out of his router to jack things up as well.
This is why I don't like P2P on PC. It only works well for some game types, namely RTS. For FPS, this crap just doesn't cut it. And it also kills the solid communities that dedicated servers provide. |
|
 | reply to brianiscool I was worried about this my self, because I to hate P2P.
However after playing for the past two days I have only come across one or two servers that had a small amount of lag. If the host blows up or something it just freezes the game, migrates to another server and continues play. It honestly isn't a horrible setup.
On the counter side of that subject not having server admins is bad in my opinion.
All in all though I feel the online aspect of the game is better then MW1. Nade spam isn't as bad, some of the perks are better/more fun, kill streaks are fun like the guided missile, sentry gun, AC130 Gunship. |

No DS = No Community, No Admins, and No dedicated pipe. Those are the top 3 factors for me. |

| reply to StubbyinKCMO wait a minute. are you trying to tell me that this game doesn't have a multiplayer screen that you can scroll through a list of servers to click on and play? -- I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass and i'm all outta bubblegum. |
|
 | nope, and you can't even kick people off a game. So, when the cheater's arrive this game is dead. |

| are they idiots? why would a company release a game with a multiplayer config like that? seems like the game design team took a step back in technology rather than keeping with the status quo. did they save some enormous amount of cash by not programming in the common multiplayer config of the current FPS scene? what specific individual made this decision and convinced everyone else this would fly in the market place? i was thinking of buying this game but not now.
FPS minus dedicated servers = stupid implementation of multiplayer -- I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass and i'm all outta bubblegum. |

| so has there been an interview somewhere with the game design team with the question of why they decided on this ridiculous implementation of multiplayer on a FPS? -- I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass and i'm all outta bubblegum. |

Edit: The thing that's downright insulting is the response to the "is the PC version a port" question; "No, it has mouse support, keyboard chatting and graphics settings."

|
 | reply to brianiscool I think the lack of people wanting to buy the game for PC will only add fuel to the fire that PC games are dead. And it might trickle down to other games eventually. |
