Two 1 GB usb jump drives

have 2 - 1 GB usb jump drives that i cannot use. When i go to download any file to the, it says that the drive is not formatted. If i ask for to be formatted, it comes back with a message : drive cannot be formatted. The drives are new and completely blank. Is there an online program that will format these drives for me?

What is the Make/Model of the jump drives?
I think it rather odd for the drives to be COMPLETELY Blank...(AFAIK, Most come Pre-Formatted (FAT) from the Factory...?)

When you plug them in, Does the New Hardware Detected dialog identify them as anything other than "Generic" USB Disk Drives (or something similar?)

Can you access/initialize it in Windows Disk Manager (Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management)?

If so, Try to create a new partition, and see if you can format it as FAT-32...

Possibly the drives have write-protect switches on them which are set to On?

dont think so because I remember writing to the drive once, but then dont know where to look for for these write protect switches

I guess it's U3 formatted drive. It requires special tool for its removal - How do I uninstall U3 from my flash drive

Would that also work on External HD's as well? A friend purchased a 1TB USB 2.0 WD My Book essential edition external hard drive. And when he plugged it in, he gets a window that asks if he want to open a U3 to explore or run the boot file, as well as the window that wants to explore the hd part.

My Sandisk 8GB USB cruzer has a U3 on it, but I still have enough space that I can still save things to it and ignore the U3 prompt when it comes up.

I'm thinking of trying this to get rid of the U3 on my Sandisk cruzer, was wondering if it would work on the 1TB WD as well? And will it affect any files that are stored on the cruzer or WD drive?

Cajun, the link OZO provided is the only U3 uninstaller I'm aware of. For a while it was very difficult to find, they didn't want to release it to the public or something. It should work on the 1TB drive, but I would backup anything important on it and the cruzer before running it. Maybe back up the cruzer, try it there, and see if everything is left intact (it should).
