| Dlink DSL modem 2540B to Linksys wrt54GL
I have a Dlink 2540B modem that i use to access the internet The modem is configured as a PPPoE with my user name and password. I have checked obtain the default gateway automatically, NAT and firewall are checked. The ip address is the usual 192.168.1.1 and subnet mask the same 255.255.255.0 The DHCP is Enable with start of ip address 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. I installed the Linksys and went thru the quick guide and failed. I went into the Linksys and put in the internet connection to PPPoE and used the same user name and password. saved everything rebooted the DLink, linksys, and my pc with no such luck. what did i do wrong? Do i need to change an ip address? disable something? |

| In this scenario connect the D-Link 2540B to a LAN port on the WRT54GL (don't use the WRT54GL's WAN port), disable DHCP on the WRT54GL, and give it a static IP address in the same subnet (e.g., 192.168.1.2). I'd make your DHCP pool smaller so you have IPs available to statically assign (e.g., 192.168.1.100 - 150). Since the D-Link is already handling the connection to your ISP (PPPoE) there is no need for the WRT54GL to do the same. |

| said by Phil :The second option would be to bridge and disable DHCP on the D-Link. This removes the double-NAT scenario of nested routers and allows the WRT54GL to handle connecting to your ISP via PPPoE. This post covers how to put the D-Link in bridge mode (found via a quick search). You'll also want to disable DHCP as I mentioned above as the WRT54GL will handle DHCP. In this scenario everything worked like you said, but the internet seems kind of slow. Out of the three options you posted, this one and the other two in the other post, which one is the best in regards to speed? |
