Which processor is best?

Hello,

I am building a computer at dell.com. I'm trying to decide which processor to get. These are my choices:

Core 2 Duo

Intel® Core™2 Duo T9800 2.93GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) [add $450]

Core 2 Quad
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q9000 2.0GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) [add $250]

Intel® Core™2 Quad Q9100 2.26GHz (12MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB) [add $800]

Is the Quad Q9000 better than the Duo T9800 even though it costs less?

Is the Quad Q9100 worth $800?

I'll be using the laptop for internet and gaming. I mostly just play simple games like you get at reflexive.com, but even some of those bog down the laptop I have now.

Thanks.

Edit: Don't know if it's important, but here are the choices I have picked so far.

Thanks elios, I'll definitely check that link out. I hate to give up my AlienWare laptop though. I am a sci-fi freak and love the neat-o customization I have with it. But...for a computer just as good or better for that much less...I guess I could give it up. lol

Can you give details about your present system that you say is not performing adequately?

A $3000+ alienware sounds like massive overkill for the uses you describe. Tell us about your present machine's cpu, graphics, amount ram so we have a frame of reference.

Agreed...(edit: nevermind....i read it wrong. I thought you already had an alienware laptop).

Regardless, before you go spending money you don't have to, post the specs of your current pc/ laptop here. You may just need to clean up the OS & HD on your current laptop. The games on that site shouldn't be that cpu intensive...and also remember, alot of those type of games load data from the servers, so you're going to have some type of 'wait' regardless of what CPU you have, as it downloads the data.

Note the system elios mentions is 1 1/2" smaller display and a considerably lower performance graphics option.
This may not be a problem in your situation since, as I said, what you chose seems to be much more than you need, but it would be best if you gave us some detail about your present rig and links to the specific games you are playing at the site you mentioned.

lol...yeah, I know it's overkill, but it's a birthday/Christmas/graduation present, so my husband said get what I wanted. I don't think he meant for me to spend $3000 though.

My laptop:

Dell Inspiron 2200
60GB hard drive
Intel(R) Celeron(R) M 1.5 GHz processor
1GB RAM
Windows XP Home

Not sure about the video. I'm not sure where to look to find it. One of the games from reflexive that comes to mind that gives me trouble is The Dark Legions. Only gives me trouble during battles, then it gets "draggy". There's another one, but I don't recall the name.

Your present laptop has some kind of old pathetic intel integrated graphics.

I had a look at the requirements for the game you mention.

I think these are a couple of other viable options from best to lesser:

This seems to be a very decent dual core with 260M graphics and 17" screen. Others should check this out to see if I'm missing something, the price seems pretty good($1150):

For $750 here is a core 2 dual with 4650 graphics and a 15" screen

For 650 here is an athlon x2 with 9600M GT graphics.

I think any of these would work and would be a big advance over what you have now.

I would lean toward the first one with the considerably better 260M graphics. That's really more than you need for the games you describe but you were looking at 3 times the price and money doesn't seem to be an issue. The other machines are fine though, especially if you don't think there is much chance of your gaming interest expanding into more demanding games.

Hi,

The problem with recommending a laptop to someone is that they can not try or feel the laptop before buying it.

I have tried most of the new models with a 17" screen and they have Way too much flex to them. Also the keyboards feel spongy to me.

I always tell people to try it before they drop big bucks on a laptop.

Places like Walmart,Costco,ETC, have the laptops of model that are the same construction on the outside, Jsut different internals. At least then you will know if the laptop feels comfortable to use. If it does not feel cofortable to the user then they will hate it from day one....

Ok, that just made me giggle.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I'll give them a look over.

Really? Flexy and spongy? Hmm.

Not a bad idea. Will give them a look next time I'm at Wal-mart. Thanks for the info.
