 | Umm...gee, that's a tricky one...wait...let me guess...someone who runs a pay-per-click survey website?
Did I win a prize? |

 | And they are probably related to the idiots that rename shows, repack them and upload to rapidshare and the like. Luckily usenet doesnt seem to be as widespread with the passwording crap as it was a few months ago. |

shearerNorthern LightsPremium join:2002-06-18 Asia | reply to IllIlIlllIll I got hit by one such idiocy a few weeks ago. A password was slapped on a 4.3gig x264 release.
Luckily I found a password from this blog. »www.jimbeeer.com/?p=1906&cpage=1 |

You can check before hand if their is a password though before downloading a whole release though. May be the best option sense sometimes it may be impossible to get the password. |

Stop copyingPremium join:2001-06-03 Kenner, LA | reply to IllIlIlllIll The only time I see someone wanting to do this if they are using Newsgroups for backing up all their data. Though who would do this? Sure it would be nice, if you have the upload bandwidth/speed, but still anyone can crack a password if they have enough dedication and time. Nothing is impossible on the pc that is for sure. The only other reason is to share files with only a friend or family member. Though there are easier ways to do it as well than that. I think it is more of a thing to do just to annoy people. Some just love to do that. I really could care a less though because like I said I can check before downloading all the files if I really want to. That way no wasted bandwidth or time.
Better to use just a portable external hard drive but I guess if you don't want to spend the money sure still it really is not that expensive. |

shearerNorthern LightsPremium join:2002-06-18 Asia | These are usually done by pay-per-survey marketeers seeing the Usenet as another revenue source. They get paid everytime some dude fills in a survey. In this case - Usenet users desperate to get the RAR password.
In Internet Marketing terms, it's called CPA(Cost Per Action). Annoying as hell. |

Thanks. Good thing I can test to see if a release has a password then before downloading the whole thing. I try not to rely on comments from other people because that doesn't always happen. This may sound stupid but people lie as well. I seen it happen more than once before on comments. Don't ask me why they would do that but they do. Your guess is as good as mine. |

In Merlin's opinion, this is almost as bad as virus infected files, and any password protected archive are either not indexed there, or include the passwords with them. -- "The trouble with computers, of course, is that they are very sophisticated idiots." - Doctor Who (from Robot)

| reply to IllIlIlllIll I'm seeing it more and more often, particularly when I get my NZB files from binsearch.org. Sorry to dump on them, but it is frustrating to download a few TV shows only to un-RAR them and see "Click here for password.url". Arrgh.
Hopefully this is just the latest fad de jour and it fades away quickly. With any luck such morons will find better things to do with their time, like try suicide or some other useful pursuit. |

Fight them by testing out the release before downloading the whole thing. Quite easy to do. |

ErikRP join:2004-11-06 Winnipeg, MB | Yes, I could do that - but since it doesn't take that much longer to download a whole file versus part of it, and requires me to manually check it anyway, it's still a waste of my time. |

True. I am sure someone out there could create a downloader or maybe sabnzbd could add the feature where it would test to see if you need a password to extract the files before downloading the whole thing. If so it would alert you and stop the download. That way you could choose a different release instead. Not sure if that is even possible though. |

| Not as easy - or satisfying - as stopping the jerk(s) responsible for this, but there are ways to get around their spam.
As suggested earlier, there are several sites that do a good job of weeding out that garbage, including Merlin, TVNZB, etc. |

The thing is you waste time by doing that but I am all for stopping the person doing it still though. Just saying. I think if you ignore it sooner or later they stop. Not saying always but most of the time I would think. Still it would be awesome to be the one to stop them that is for sure! |

| reply to IllIlIlllIll Usually, password protected rar files uploaded to torrent or newsgroup sites are created by people wanting to get paid a referral fee from a web site that pays.
You download the file, perhaps a movie someone really wants to see, like "New Moon" which opened today. You go to open the rar file and it's password protected and you're told to open an account at some site to get your password. The link contains a referral code so the scammer can get paid.
You pay the site but no password. The scammer gets paid his referral fee and you're out your money and you never even get to see the movie.
Go to isohunt.com and search for "New Moon" and you'll see a couple of dozen torrents with rar password protected files, all with referral links to a web site that charges you around $40 to "join". |
