Multiple gripes...

For years I used a local ISP (Omsoft) for DSL service. Extremely reliable but slightly pricey...foolishly a couple of weeks ago I decided to switch to AT&T DSL.

The first order I placed I verified by 3rd party but the order disappeared. That should have been my clue, a nameless god offering me a chance to stay with the local guys. Instead after a week I called again. This time the order "took", well, half of it did. They did switch me over but still have not sent the DSL modem in spite of a few phone calls. I'm still using the old one from the local ISP.

At first I was ecstatic to get triple the download + 50% faster upload at $5 cheaper/month. But within a day or two the problems surfaced. Uploads almost always good, but downloads very erratic...either dropping sync or speed very bad, a fraction of upload speed. This usually happens morning and evening.

Reading another recent post here, I ordered a new DSL modem from Newegg and will try that along with analyzing the line stats it will give. The lack of modem from AT&T may still be a blessing from the nameless god, it will give me an excuse to return to the local guys. Imaginary speed and imaginary savings cannot compete will real reliability.

The American-based AT&T is fairly knowledgable and quite helpful (since they are constantly under scrutiny). The Indian-based help and chat is absolutely, 100% useless. They know nothing and only read from scripts they don't understand.

I would never recommend AT&T to anybody.

I have had reliable DSL service for nearly nine years, now. Never had to deal with India for tech support (years ago one issue, before SBC outsourced).

I would have no trouble recommending AT&T DSL; with one caveat: If you are interested in speed, and not so much how much you are paying for Internet, Comcast offers faster, albeit pricier, Internet connections around here.

I am ambivalent toward Uverse; being disinclined to move away from DirecTV for either Uverse, or Comcast.
