| yahoo chat and text locking up my email
When I log into yahoo now, it has 'loading mail chat and text' in the left hand side and never finishes. I can't click on my email, the options, or anything except 'sign off'. The cancel doesn't work either. Found 2 friends with same problem, but they gave up and switched to gmail or hotmail. I'd like to keep my yahoo, but not if it is totally unusable, which it is now due to their new 'chat and text' feature which I don't want and doesn't work. |

Unless you think some malware is causing this?

1 edit | reply to TexasChuck Perhaps this Yahoo! help article will help. I use it and it does work (except I return 0.0.0.0 instead of 127.0.0.1):
As a network administrator, how do I disable Yahoo! Mail's chat feature on my network?
We understand that not all organizations support the use of Instant Messaging inside their networks. If you need to prevent Yahoo! Mail users on your network from chatting, we suggest blocking DNS lookups to webcs.msg.yahoo.com and httpcs.msg.yahoo.com by returning 127.0.0.1. Users will see a disconnection error if they attempt to connect to chat Note: This will not remove the actual chat application or its display box, but it will stop network access and free up the bandwidth that the messenger application would otherwise use. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. Especially so for a low bandwidth connection where the messenger connection attempts do indeed interfere with normal internet access. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. Yeah, that's why I added the "unless you think malware....blah blah".
I can't relate too much, I don't use web mail for anything other than a gmail account for garbage stuff. Oh, and a hotmail acct for MS stuff. -- You can chain my body to the earth, but still my spirit flies!

| reply to La Luna said by La Luna :I don't see how this is a security issue? Well, when this feature was rolled out by yahoo, without any warning, I was greeted by a "Hey wanna chat?" popup from "pretty boy" or some such name. »Yahoo chat & mobile text
The feature wasn't only added, it was ENABLED by default.
However, as other yahoo users did NOT have this chat box, that really started to look ominous (Upon further investigation it was discovered that this was being rolled out slowly so not all users saw this for some time, and the version of the yahoo mail interface being used also was a factor.)
I simply couldn't know if my yahoo email account had been breached, if the yahoo page had been hacked or if some other malware on my system was causing chat popups to appear in yahoo. So I'd call that a security issue. |

Well, perhaps Yahoo! is slowly phasing the ability to disable the integrated chat "feature" the same way that they slowly sneaked in its unwelcome appearance. It took several months for this new "feature" to appear in my Yahoo! accounts after some others first started reporting it. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. 1 edit | reply to TexasChuck And now here's the latest (I must be one of the lucky ones to be on the top of the list for rollouts).
In addition to the "Chat and Mobile Text" box on the left, there is now a "Get Update From Others" box on the right side. It will display the names of three of the people that you have written to (not from what I can tell, just those in your address book). You can close them, and then a new list of three names appears in rotation. It took me 15 minutes to go through and close EVERY name that I've written to so now while the feature still appears there are NO names appearing.
Now, imagine the possibilities. You write to your girlfriend, your wife will know just because it will appear on your yahoo mail homepage. How about DivorcesRUs, I'veGotAFlatulenceProblem, etc. The possibilities are endless.
It's becoming the swiss army knife of mail sites. Pretty soon you won't be able to find your mailbox though all the additional unwanted services that reduce your privacy. |

I loaded the options page and clicked FILE/SAVE HTML and then had a file in my DOCUMENTS folder.. (options.html) I was gonna upload it here for you guys to try it but i discovered it uploads the options available FROM THE SERVER WHEN YOU ACCESS THAT PAGE!! (The file wouldnt have worked)
The only way to do it would be to find out exactly what it sends to the server when you UNCHECK "ENABLE CONNECTIONS" AND THEN "SAVE CHANGES" to DISABLE CONNECTIONS and try to super impose the command being sent.......
Thats horrible Blue2,im so sorry to all of you that have to deal with that garbage!!
Have you all tried switching back to CLASSIC? |

| reply to TexasChuck I've got something switched off in both FF and Opera. I can't get to options, and I really don't care. I managed to check offline on that stupid chat, and don't even see it unless I let Noscript enable yimg. I also can't use the new mail. Don't care about that, either. They are getting invasive. You can see your facebook account, new friends, anything you have uploaded to Flickr. It's funny, you type in your password and it's replaced by dots, yet you mouse over mail on main page and up pops whatever is in your inbox. That's privacy? |

2 edits | reply to TexasChuck As so many of the above posters, I, too, have this "chat and Mobil Text". I never got any of the aforesaid annoying popups, however.
I run FX with the AdBlockPlus add-on and went into ABP and successfully blocked the chat/mobil box! First I blocked the lines ending in loading.gif, arrow2.gif, userstatus_2.swf and imsdk_2.0.swf.
That did not get rid of the box. So I then went back and also blocked the following two lines that end in imboot.js and msgr.js
THAT DID THE TRICK! It is now gone from my mail page!
I know this just blocks the dang thing from appearing before my eyes.....but hey, that's better than nothing.
Edit: I also added the two url's Netfixer posted to my hosts file. Maybe that will truly block all related communication. |
