Network Drive Suggestion?

I am looking to purchase a network drive (standalone) for the sole purpose of backing up my digital media (music, photos, movies, etc.) and stream them on my xbox 360. I am looking for a 1 - 1.5 TB drive and definitely do not want to spend over $150.

I was wondering if downloading directly to the Network drive will work? This would be a big bonus because I will not require to download and then move the data. I generally download data at the rate of around 19 Mbps. Is that too fast for an external network drive to handle? From reading/researching seems like eSata might be able to handle this but I am not 100% sure if it will.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I use a D-Link DNS-323 with two Samsung HD501LJ 500 GB SATA drives running in RAID 1 and am very happy with it - but the total cost was closer to $400 for the whole thing.

I installed it a couple years ago - if I had to do it over again, I'd probably use 1 TB drives (or larger) - although I have yet to fill up what I have.

I use it just as a normal drive on all my household computers. I have a 1 GB Ethernet home LAN, so access speeds are quite good. I use it as a storage drive and to stream media to my computers and to a PS3 and a D-Link DSM-520 (Networked media player).

The DNS-323 comes with a functional UnPnP media server but I use a third party player I like better - Twonkey Media Server »www.twonkymedia.com/

Here's a link to the DNS-323 wiki: »wiki.dns323.info/ - there's a lot of information on hacks. The DNS-323 runs on a Linux platform, so there's lots you can do with it - beyond the intended purposes.

well, first off you should know what supported file types the 360 will play. If you like high quality/lossless file types, you are out of luck. see here :

as well as you should look at how the 360 shares files, whether it be with attached via usb or through network. what I would do is to use your desktop(assuming you have one) and just add a couple large hard drives to that and put all your files on that. I can stream any of the supported files off of any pc in the house this way.

Sounds like you want something like this:

From reading the description, you should be able to save directly to the drive over your network once the drive is connected to a router.
