| How is this PSU?
I brought this over one of the OCZ PSU that was 500W
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···17702010
Only one thing I noticed is it does not have many SATA plugs on it. I have 2 hard drives and a SATA optical drive which would pretty much take up all the plugs plus the ATi radeon 4870.
I just wonder if I jumped the gun my budget was around $70 -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

Mdoc Ehh... munch munch... what's up, Doc?
join:2007-03-27 Sterling, VA | 550W power is fine for what you have. It's more than you need, that only means you can add some stuff, like another optical drive without penalty. If you need more connectors, all you do is get a "Y" adapter cable. You're fine. |

| well it wont be running what's listed in my profile here but a C2D system but I still think it should still be enough now.
And I guess the Y cable would work.. just not fond of them because some of them are really cheap and tend to get loose inside. |

| Yes, well, it's less of a problem than using a 20-pin power cable instead of 24-pin, because we're talking about less current through the "Y" cables. That doesn't matter, so it's really an aesthetic decision whether you want a "clean look" or not. Do they really get loose? Never experienced that. |

| yeah they do I had one connected to a SATA dvd writer and I'd notice at times I had no power to the drive or if the tray would slide close that was enough to disconnect the power the Y- cable it was odd never seen it happen myself.. I solved it by closing the pins on the Y-cable side so they would grip a bit better. |

join:2007-03-27 Sterling, VA 1 edit | Well, if you can spend a little more, return that thing and get a Corsair PSU. I bought a 400 watter that has more SATA connectors than I need: six. Or, use a tie-wrap to keep two power connectors together.
edit: a thin tie-wrap... |

I think when I add 2 more drives I might buy a new PSU -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

I agree with Mdoc and the supply you have should be fine.
Just for added information note that the supply you have has 36A 12v. The 400 corsair mentioned is 30A and the 450 corsair is 33A so there isn't a lot of difference between them in that regard. Any should be fine for running a single graphics card like a 4870. The 450 uses components that are a step up from the 400, though neither is junk, and either would be fine.
The reason makers give numbers like 500w needed is because many people have cheap overrated supplies that have minimal 12v capability and they want to minimize the likelihood of problems, complaints, tech support calls. That card does not need a 500w supply if the supply is a decent quality recent design with acceptable 12v.
You don't need to race out and spend more money on a new supply however. |

I wanted to test some memory out beforehand.. the PSU is a Antec but it only does 16A on +12V -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

@Level3.net | reply to Subaru No 16A isn't enough. You don't want to do that. |
