My question still stands. |

If it's "only product" used you would choose a "suite" that included hips , firewall (win 7 is sufficiant) , sanbox enviroment , on access scanner , good detection rates not just for virus but also for spyware etc. Kaspersky springs to mind for a worthy mention for this "suite" critera. -- Paradigm Shift beta test pilot. So far nothing to report. Now is the not right time to stop folding. |

 | I mean pure virus scanner. No other things like firewalls and such. Not a suite.....just a pure virus scanner. |

There is no 100% kill virus scanner. Which means your question ask for a subjective answer.
The poll provides a widely sampled, subjective answer.
Therefore, the poll IS the best response. |

Another for Avast! ........and on and on and on and on.

It has links to the various software manufacturers where you can check which one offers the product you need for your specific circumstances.
Just as a matter of record, the most frequently recommended AV's here currently are (in no particular order):
Avast Avira NOD32 NAV 2010 Kaspersky Microsoft Security Essentials AVG
There is no "best" one. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Another factor is what plays well with the software you have on your system; the only way to determine the "best" AV for you is by trial-and-error. We can only tell you what works best for us on our particular set-up. The "best" approach is a layered one using security products that complement each other, and the use of commonsense when surfing and downloading. -- Patriotism is not waving a flag, it is living the ideals

 | reply to Bon Scott OK. Please disregard the question then. I have done a web search from reputable anti-virus testing entities. They have provided guidance.
I was curious as to forum members "real world" experiences.
I'll try another security forum. |

Thug21Just Chillin'Premium join:2005-08-21 kudos:1 3 edits | I always use Avira on every PC, but they have some reported issues with Windows 7 and chkdsk that they are trying to fix at the moment.
So for now, I'm using a free F-Secure license that I got from a promotion. It seems to be alright too.
They both have good detection via published tests. Although I must say I don't get to test it much, I've never run into an infection.
I also use a standard account and UAC on high settings.
I'll probably put Avira back shortly, though. |

Checking other security forums is always a good idea although the responses here from here are pretty good. I will say that if you were put off since people tended to to not want to go through all their personal answers again beyond the poll, I am really sorry. Sometimes, this Forum can seem most inhospitable to people.
Personally, I use Avast, the free form. I have done so for quite some time and find it plays well with the other programs on my system. I have tried others that didn't and that is the biggest thing one needs to know. Something could be great for my system and lousy for yours. It's kind of a trial and error process in many cases. Avast for me has been great; simple and will be getting even better with the new version that should be out soon wihich is supposed to be better and I think, lighter. -- JKK
