Brand New WRT54GL V 1.1 Very Poor Performance

I just got this new router and flashed it straight to Tomato 1.25 as this seemed highly recommended as a good firmware to install. However I am getting terrible performance out of it. The ping i am receiving on speedtest.net is close to 2000 ms and about 1.4 mbps download. The wireless is also very slow. When I bypass the router I get very good latency, about 18 ms. I also happen to have a WRT54G v 2.2 which I bought for my father-in-law, it is still with the default firmware and it works very well for the wired connection, the wireless is still a little sluggish but better than the WRT54GL. Now I am wondering is it possible I bought a faulty router? Because that would suck since I think I defaulted any warranty by flashing the firmware.

Do a proper reset on it (press and hold the reset button for ~30 seconds) and try again.

Thanks for taking the time to help. I took your advice and reset the router and at first the speeds are blistering, about 18ms latency. However, about 1/2 hour later the speed starts suffering. I tried resetting the router three times and each time the result was the same, it starts off very efficient but then degrades (I just tested my ping again and it is showing 2811ms). I have done absolutely nothing to the settings. I wonder why this is happening? I use a Motorola cable modem I got from Shaw cable here in B.C.

Are you running some sort of P2P app?

"Are you running some sort of P2P app?"

Nope. And the first few times after I rebooted the router I enabled WPA security so I'm certain no one else was piggybacking on the signal. I'm going to take it over to the father-in-laws tomorrow evening and see how it runs on his modem.

Your story sounds familiar since I bought a new 54GL V1.1 about 6 weeks ago. Put on 3rd party firmware ddwrt and had poor through put at ~1 Mbs on a 3 Mbs dsl line. I had the 54GL overclocked and 80mw on the wireless power. Problems could have been not resetting like Phil thinks (I'm almost certain I did that step). I went back to the stock firmware and ran it 1 week before I put it in the closet as a spare for my old 54GS v1.1 . Throughput was good with the stock firmware and xtra features aren't needed.

I was thinking the overclocking by about 10% was the problem. Wonder if there have been any changes to the latest batch of 54GL's ?

Once again thanks for the input. Well I decided to re-install the original firmware (I downloaded it from the Linksys website) but I still get the same problem. Whenever I reset or power cycle the router, it works great at first, then about 1/2 hour later becomes dreadfully slow. I think I have had enough and newegg agreed to accept it's return. Now hopefully I haven't destroyed the box..

Talk about Murphy's Law... I always keep boxes of things I buy, they're overflowing in the garage, but for some reason I tossed the box for this thing. I guess I'm left with an expensive paper weight

I just installed DD-WRT, hopefully that will fix the problem... although I'm pretty convinced now I was sold a bunk router.

The 80 mW may be your problem.

I also recently got a GL and put Tomato on it. I then did a lot of reading and research about the power levels and how it can affect performance. I found that anything over about 35mW causes the signal to distort, thus lowering the performance. You can actually get far better performance from a 35mW (or less) undistorted signal than a 50mW distorted signal. Personal experimentation by me has verified what I read. I run mine at 32mW, it is located in the basement and it provides coverage throughout my 2 story home without a problem, at full connection speed, 24/7.

The stock firmware / setting for a GL has 22 to 26mW of power output.
