Hey guys this may be an off-the-wall question, but do consoles have the concept of Regions like movie DVDs do? IOW if I buy a PS3 game in the UK would I have any problem playing that game on my PS3 in the U.S.? (and vice-versa, insert any country)
Actually that brings up another point: the TV standards in the various parts of the world would have to be handled by the console hardware, but is there anything at the software level (the game itself)? For example, the old NTSC vs PAL, or all the newer HD standards - do the games have to be rewritten or is that just handled at the hardware level? |

| The games have two versions just the good ole NTSC & PAL ones, have the NTSC console you need NTSC disc, vice versa with PAL, that didn't change with the upgrade to HD. Just be sure to check which version it is before you buy. -- One time a person asked where the F button was on their keyboard. I told them they would find it next to the U button. |

Thanks |

So there are two issues: region free (or not) PAL/NTSC format |

That just means the PS3 can play a dvd from any region. It's my understanding that regions exist mainly to split off what languages are supported to that region, which is why there are many region-free dvd players. Regions iirc don't deal with the the actual video format.
As for video formats NTSC & PAL formats are being phased out right. However the same format problem exists thanks to multiple formats existing again with the global DTV transition. Here is a map I borrowed from wikipedia. -- One time a person asked where the F button was on their keyboard. I told them they would find it next to the U button. |

I have a Jeremy Clarkson DVD that came from the UK. Even when I ripped the files, recoded them to NTSC (according to Nero Recode) and burned a new disc, the ps3 absolutely refused to even start the disc.
The 360 on the other hand, played it no problem. -- Front Line Force Fortress Forever |
