Problems with Catalyst Control Center

I seem to be having some problems with CCC causing certain games to lock up with a sound loop just like in this video:

The only difference with me though is after about a minute I will get a BSOD with a stop error 0x 00000101. After some Google research I have found it to be a video error despite the stop error referring to it being a secondary CPU. In further research I have found others using driver version 9.5 and the CCC that comes with version to be stable under Vista and Win7 (running win7 32bit). So I uninstalled the current drivers and CCC then cleaned up with Diver Cleaner then installed version 9.5. The lock ups and BSODs went away but, my frame rates dropped in half in all games. I then rinse and repeated then installed the version 9.11 again.

The 9.11 version will work so long as I disable CCC from the start up for Windows. The problem with that though is I lose control of the fan speed, CrossFire gets disabled, and my frame rates drop in half again in all games. I have tried every version as well past 9.5 with the same results and the suck ass 9.5 version is the only version of CCC that won't cause any problems.

The games I have these problems with are TF2, UT3 Black, RTCW:ET and Quake Live. Amazingly though the real buggy game SilkRoad Online will stay stable under driver version 9.11 with CCC enabled (go figure).

The setup:
AMD 9550 AM2+
DFI LANPARTY DK 790FXB-M2RSH
ATI 4870 and 4850 paired in CrossFire
4gb G.Skill ram DDR2 1066mhz
750watt Corsair PSU
WD Velociraptor 150 HDD

I'm out of ideas and researching the search engines only results in using the suck ass 9.5 drivers as a solution. Any ideas on where I should look next or anything I may have over looked?

I don't know what more there is that I could say for you and your issue, but I had the same problem with ATi in the past, and it's one reason I came to be afraid everytime there is a newer version driver from them when I primarily had a Radeon card in my system.

KotOR alone became a one year ordeal for me back in '04, and then when they finally released a fixed driver, only to break it again in the very next month's release.

You may just have to stick with the 9.5 driver and keep a copy of it around, and basically play driver hockey until you get a newer, fixed release.

I just got a new system and I have this happen to, not to this extent. Some times the game recovers or crashes to the desktop or just restarts. Some times the screen even changes to a solid color or gets vertical lines and restarts.. its ticken me off. I get the screen corruption sometimes just browsing the web. Im not sure if its hardware or software issue.

Doesn't mean that there can't be an interlinked issue between another driver either or a timing issue with something on the motherboard(it happens with new driver sets when they do performance increases). Since the sound is getting stuck in a loop, something to try would be to disable the onboard sound if that's what you're using, or disable the sound altogether and see if you're still having problems with the CAT's. If you're not there may be another issue that's causing the stop error to be related to video.

I had a problem a few years ago on a build similar to this where the soundcard would cause the video to kick out, and force a stop under XP. But the reported error was a video stop code. I ended up having to adjust the AGP write timings to fix it. PCIE well not so up and up on that anymore, but hope that might give you another avenue to look at.

Reading over your post I decided to dig a bit deeper with those suggestions. In doing so I found that CCC was clocking the 4870 at the same speed as the 4850 (using the 9.5's). It never did that before so I unlocked Overdrive and set the 4870 at it's default speeds (750mhz core/ 900mhz memory as opposed to CCC setting it for 633mhz core/ 800mhz memory). Then I thought to myself, what if this was the problem with the 9.11's? It was a long shot but at this point I said screw it, what do I have to lose?

So I uninstalled everything, cleaned up with Driver Cleaner again, then reinstalled the 9.11's again. Sure enough it had clocked the 4870 at the speed of the 4850 as well. Again I set the 4870 for default in Overdrive, checked the 4850 and all was default there as should be. I started up TF2 and was able to play for a few hours now but, a new problem came up. The game would lock up in a sound loop after so long but now, I was able to get back to the desktop now using ctrl+alt+del and use Task Manager to close the game with no BSOD's. This was true for the other games as well aside from SilkRoad Online (which I still don't get how the buggiest of them all remained fully stable through it all lol!).

Thinking back to your post again I disabled the sound (Realtek HD Audio card no name brand) and not only was I able to play without a hitch, the frame rates in all games saw a substantial increase. Well, looks like I got what I paid for here and it's time to step it up to a better card.

Talking in the chat box on the server I frequent in TF2 quite a bit of people recommended this card to me: »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···29132007

Anything not to like about it?

The Xonar is a good card for OpenAL stuff, but if you got games that use EAX extensively, then sadly the only real way to go is with a bona-fide X-Fi (read: NOT the xtremeaudio).

In my case, I was trying to save up for an X-Fi Prelude, or the newer Forte. But then I ended up with enough in best buy rewards certificates that I was able to get the XtremeGamer for $50. And so, that's what I went with.

Check out MSI Afterburner: »www.guru3d.com/article/msi-after···-review/

It's like CCC on steroids. The clocks can be pushed higher, you can create your own custom fan speed profile, it can adjust the memory voltage (on boards that support it) and it logs the data to a graph so you can see what's actually going on. It works on ATI and Nvidia cards, and not just MSI versions. It works on my sons Visiontek 4850 quite nicely.

whats your Catalyst AI setting? OFF often disabled crossfire (definitely disables it on dual-gpu cards), standard enables it and Advanced does some extra crazy optimizations that can lead to texture issues or crashing if the game doesnt 100% support it or if you card isnt as stable as you thought it was.

you may want to disable crossfire and run the 4870 by itself and see if it crashes. if it doesnt, try the 4850 by itself, it could always be a bad video card regardless of what you've found on google able the stop error. video cards and drivers are by far the hardest piece of equipment to troubleshoot.

by the way, MSI afterburner is just a reskin of rivatuner with a few new abilities or something. i hear it has better support for new ATI cards since he hasnt updated the real RT in a long time. he was paid by evga to create their precision tool before MSI's afterburner and he's been pretty busy with both.

Welcome to the 3 year issue that seems like it will NEVER be fixed.

Do you have Vista or Win7? Turn of Aero.... that "kinda" helps.

Install JUST the ATI driver... NOT CCC.

People say it is an overheat issue (not mine... my card barely gets close to 40C.

People say it is a power issue (which I am going to test now because I bought a new PSU).

People say it is a driver issue.

People say it is an OS issue.

What pisses me off is that I built my own system back in Oct08.... and then all of a sudden in March or April I started having the problem. I tried uninstalling some windows hotfix they suggested in that thread.... but no luck.

I even installed Win7 from scratch... no luck.

That is why I am trying the PSU now.

weird. im on my 2nd ATI card under Vista/7 and while the 4870x2 had it's own exclusive dual-gpu+CCC bugs, i never had sound issues or freezing.

are you using HDMI audio? i always disable the HDMI audio or uncheck it from installing all together.
