[Wireless] Remove antenna on WRT54G v8 router?

On the WRT54G v8 (I assume that mean v8.0) is it possible to remove the antenna?

I picked up a Hawking antenna so I could expand my range, but now looking at the router I can't figure out how the antennas come off.

They certainly don't appear to screw off, and I don't want to force them.

Manual is useless (doesn't even mention the antenna). I did do a search and someone (Jerry WOOF! ) said he thought v8 was a fixed antenna...

Can someone confirm this?

And if this is indeed the case, what do you suggest for extending my range if I can't replace the router's antenna?
Thanks,
Coriolis

The version 8 doesn't come with removable antennas.

If this is new router and you still have the box/receipt, return it and look for a WRT54GL. This router does have removable ones and also can accept 3rd party firmware should you ever decide to go that route.

In the mean time you could make a reflector to better direct the signal. Soooo simple but very effective, and it's nearly free!!!! Link for plans: »www.freeantennas.com/projects/te···dex.html
or »kyros.at/fon/parabolreflector_en.pdf (you will have to change the post hole size to match the shape of your antenna.)

Or take the router apart, pull off the fixed antennas, install a new pair of pigtails with the connector of your choice and then solder them in place on the routers circuit board. You will need a soldering iron and some hand tools (drill, files, etc) to mod the case. Soldering the leads to the board is the most critical part, the coaxial cable is small and rather delicate, and also any short between the inner and outer conductors (you can check for this with an ohm meter BEFORE you plug it in) will likely damage the radio. This route takes time, requires parts (pigtails + a set of new antennas), and some skills. If the reflector fails to give you the signal you want, modding likely will not help.

Cool, thanks for the info. Not sure I'm up to pulling the thing apart, yet, but do like the idea of the reflector and will defiitely give it a try.
