Everything seems to be working great except for the wireless- the system can connect to completely unsecured networks, but not to networks that have ANY form of encryption.
The only XP cd I had around was without any service packs, so I installed it and then upgraded to sp1 and then went to sp3; slipstreaming the install cd directly with sp3 was not an option as there are no other windows computers in the house, nor will there likely ever be any.
This laptop has a broadcom-based 802.11b only mini-pci card in it. Now, obviously 802.11b cards are incapable of using any security beyond WEP. So, I used a spare router to configure a test network that only used WEP. My Linux and Mac systems can connect to this network just fine. The windows laptop, however, cannot.
The laptop will see the network, but when it tries to associate it will give an error about having limited functionality due to being unable to dhcp an address. Manually assigning an address does not work either- the system will say it is associated properly but will be unable to even ping the gateway. The wireless router WILL see the mac address of the laptop as a connected client.
I went so far as to swap the wireless card out for another known-good 802.11b/g card, and have the exact same issue; if the router has no security, the system can connect, but as soon as any is enabled, the system is unable to connect properly.
I have applied all service packs and let windows update run its course. It's been ages since I have messed with XP so I am not sure what may be wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just need to get this working before I hand the system off to my friend (I just feel so tainted touching a windows box!) |

Unless someone has the specific wireless update, you might try searching the MS Knowledge Base to see what you need to add. |
