| Router REALLY slows me down...
Hello everyone in this forum. This is my first time posting here. I have optimum online, and here is my problem. I have the linksys 4 port router, newest firmware, just to get that going. I used to have a toshiba pcx1100u cable modem. I consistently got 8000 down on the speakeasy speed tests with it, along with the router. no problem. i recently got rid of that modem, for a sb4100, because its supported by optonline, and because its more stable, and because it is now capable of those speeds with the new firmware that optimum online is giving to us. With the new modem, sb4100, i usually get around 8000 down without the router, but only 3000 or so down with it, half of what i used to get. my question is, what can i do? I already know my node is capable of 8000 down, easy, so thats not the problem. My computer is tweaked all it can be. I know the firmware in both the router and cable modem are the newest available. I have tried resetting everything. Tried cloning my MAC id to match the NIC I am using, and nothing is working. If anyone else can think of anything, please let me know. This thread was started in the optonline forum a few days ago, and a lot of good folks have been adding to it, so i figured i would start it here now. If anyone suggests something we have already tried, I will just write back that we tried it already. Any and all help welcome. |

| reply to radioguinea I know you don't want to hear this, but my Linky works fine with Optonline. First, you don't have to clone your MAC address. Just shut the router off by pulling the plug, shut the modem off, wait about 15 seconds, turn the modem back on, wait till it synchs, then turn the router back on. It should renew it's lease and have a new WAN IP address. If not, go to the setup page and release, then renew.
After that, all you have to do is change your RWIN value in Win98/ME. At least, that's all I did here. Use static addresses on your LAN, and turn the DHCP off. The default MTU should be 1500 without any changes on your part. See how it works after that. By the way, you must have firmware v1.39 or higher to attain the high speeds. |

| reply to radioguinea You should be able to use DHCP or Static just fine on the LAN side. Its just a matter of personal preference. You should NOT see any speed difference between DHCP or Static, If you do I suspect that you have bigger problems(ie:defective router?). defiantly use 1.39 or higher.

P.S. There are some good threads on DHCP vs. Static in this forum. Many good arguments have bee made in favor of each one. Speed is not one of them. |

| Speed Freak, I am one of the people from the other thread about this problem. I agree with you on all the ease of connection, but believe me when I ( and several others ) that there is a noticeable drop in speed behind the linksys. For a week I have been trying to solve it, to no avail. And I, as you, figured that it was a bad router and went out and got another one and low and behold.........same problem. As radioguinea said...ANY and All help welcome -- 220....221....Whatever it takes! |

I guess I don't understand what your trying to say!
I have spent the last 2 days evaluating my throughput with both DHCP and Static on the LAN side. Transfers between computers behind the linky are BLAZING either way(around 90MB's). My download speeds through the WAN are the same whether I use DHCP or Static on the LAN side.
I can't see any reason why you would see higher download speeds using Static IP's on the LAN side, instead of DHCP. As I stated earlier I see no speed difference in my benchmarking tests!

From all I've heard on here many, if not most, people running a linksys with OOL are capable of, and getting 8000+ dl's. There isn't supposed to be any loss with it as long as you have the firmware updated to at least 1.39 or higher. -- 220....221....Whatever it takes! |

| LI, I believe you do get that speed based on other posts. I accurately measured earlier firmware ( Measuring Speed Through my Linky ) and it is similar to the slower speeds that's been reported.
I definitely need to test again on recent f/w (1.39+).
I totally agree, DHCP better have zilch affect on throughput. From a simple DHCP exchange it just fills in values then behaves same as static. If it's found to affect speed I'd be surprised. But I'm the type that likes to measure it under controlled conditions (like above).
BUT...
Things that *could*, conceivably, affect throughput are: 1) Port Forwarding 2) Port Triggering 3) A DMZ set 4) Dynamic or Static routing 5) Logging 6) Anything on "Filters" page. (Even SPI, blocks and pass-throughs could... unknown but possible). 7) MTU/RWIN (obvious tweak stuff) 8) LinkSys Firmware Level!!! 9) LAN machine running at 100mbps?
Anything that makes the LinkSys check for something special can reduce throughput.
Those getting good or reduced... what is your situation on 1-9? Maybe we can find something (before I measure ).
EDIT: Added 9) [text was edited by author 2002-01-30 17:26:50] |

| Yes I do get those speeds, but only if I run straight from modem. If I hook router up my speeds drop 30-50%. I will look into the suggestions you gave. Checked most, but will double check. Any other ideas would be GREATLY appreciated -- 220....221....Whatever it takes! |

Well, I haven't been able to get anywhere with the linksys, so tonight the wife is returning one of the two I now have, and will try to swap for a netgear router. If I get the netgear tonight I will post any changes ( god I hope there are changes ) to let all who have helped on this issue know my final ( I hope ) outcome. Wish me luck, it's been ugly -- 220....221....Whatever it takes! [text was edited by author 2002-01-31 20:05:08] |
