1 edit | [DSL] Best HIGH CAPACITY and Secure DSL Modem for service from h Hi, I've got DSL dynamic IP and want to start a service temporarily from home before moving to a hosting service later if need be. But, my current Actiontec GT701-WG is outdated now. I would like an expensive one with some decent security stuff like DoS attack prevention and SPI at a min. It would also have to be able to handle a burst of many connections at once. My current modem can handle 1024 connections at once; I'm not sure if that's enough... maybe it is, but I def need an up-to-date firewall.
Also, does anyone know if my DSL service provider will come down on me if they see a sudden increase of incoming traffic?
Thanks! |

The DSL Modem/Router you have has NAT/NAPT which drops all unsolicited incoming packets at the WAN. It does this with the Firewall disabled even, but all that changes when you open ports to run any servers.
The PC that you use for a Web Server will need a Firewall on it as you have to open a port to allow it to serve pages to all unsolicited incoming requests so it becomes vulnerable from that. The server will need a ADS (Attack Detection System) also. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

 | reply to PointBreak Thanks. I'm doing some research on those topics you both suggested. But, I'm also busy and am looking for something I can throw together fairly quickly and INexpensively (typo in opening post), but that I can tweek later if I really have to.
I know I'm not being very specific, but I'm just getting started and while I'm sure I could learn all the nitty gritty details about network security, I don't have the cycles at this time.
Any more suggestions or pointers are much appreciated. |

 | reply to PointBreak This thread was mistakenly moved to this forum from the "Broadband Modem (Hardware)" forum. The question posed pertains to soho gateway/firewall equipment setup in general, regardless of who the provider is.
Let's see if this thread isn't completely buried within 24 hours. |

| reply to PointBreak If you really want flexibility for later you will need a modem/ soho router combo. The modems with routers built in just never off the same flexibility.
Currently I just have a Qwest modem doing its thing not even bridge into a linksys wrt54gs running tomato. The new wrt54gl will also run tomato firmware. the tomato firmware is setup to keep dyn dns working for me. Thus I can run servers. The wrt54gl can be found for around $50 or so. Not a business class solution but workable for home fun use. |

I use a Zoom dsl bridge at the office with a pfSense router connected.
We run mail, web and phone services behind this. |

 | reply to nonymous Tomato is interesting... what can you say about OpenWRT? Which 3rd party firmware is the easiest for newbies that can read a manual, and that a networking pro would like to use if I had to hire one later?
I have to setup my dyndns too. Are there routers that help you do this automatically out of the box? |

There are plenty of ADSL2+ Router/Modems that are very flexible. Two such examples are below.
Windstream Speedstream 4200 Full Router/Modem
Speedstream 4200 ADSL2+ Router and Modem (2 in 1 device)
Earthlink ZyXEL P660R Full Router/Modem
ZyXEL P660R ADSL2+ Router and Modem (2 in 1 device)

 | reply to Doctor Olds Doctor Olds, at this point I have no idea. I'll have to research it later as I've got to get back to some coding.
Thanks! |

nonymousPremium join:2003-09-08 Glendale, AZ | reply to PointBreak My cheapie linksys was a cheap alternative. With bridge mode you have choices of many, many soho routers for the future. Not saying modem/routers are not good, just there does tend to be way more modem/ soho options out there. |
