Video card selection help please

Of these three video cards which in your opinion would be best for a medium gaming/everyday machine, will be coupled with an AMD Phenom II x2 550 black edition Callisto chip, Asus M/B, and 4 gigs of Crucial Ballistix ram. Yes there will be some overclocking going on, well, maybe more than some.

9800 GTX hands down. IIRC the GTS 250 is just a respin of he 980GTX, and the 240 is a step down from that.

Yeah looking at the 9800 GTX and GTS 250 have 128 cores and 256-bit memory while the the 240 has 96 cores and 128-bit memory (clocked higher but not 2x to make up the difference).

In Nvidia's lineup, it takes a GTX 260 to provide a significant performance boost over the 9800 GTX. (A GTS 250 clocked higher will only just edge it out, but should use less power.)

Although it's faster, I don't think the 9800gtx is worth the extra $35-40 over the 9800gt.

Re: Video card selection help please

I have to say, I would go for Dx11, especially for such a close price difference.

This has $15 off

No way would I buy new an older design, used yes, but not for such an older card.

Save up and get more than 2x perfomance for just a bit more.

I was looking around for gpus last night myself, my gaming rig has an evga sli board so I was thinking of picking up a couple nvidia gpus and then I found The Chart and was saddened by the current state of nvidia.

After seeing this massive technical spec chart with all current graphics cards ATI is completely owning the market. I recommend an hd4870. These are easily the most bang for the buck as far as gpu processing goes. Games still run fine on oldschool direct x9 so all this dx11 crap is propaganda to sell "new" cards that only add dx11 support with no improvement of raw processing power.

It is sad, newegg had a sapphire 4870 x2 for $224 last night and the x1s for $110 both open box deals, but my sapphire 4870 x1 has been like a rock for a year now. I almost pulled the trigger on 2 of the hd 4870 x2s. Kind of sad I didn't since they are now unavailable.

if you're deadset on nvidia, get the GTS 250 instead: »www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi···er=PRICE

GTS 240 is a cross between 9800gt and 9800GTX, GTS 250 is exactly a renamed 9800GTX+ for cheaper.

Nice site, also makes me sad that it costs $50more to get a comparable nvidia card to my current hd4870. I was hoping for a comparable price to performance ratio for nvidia so I could use sli on my evga 680i lt motherboard with two nvidia cards that perform as well as two hd4870s.

From my comparisons on that site I would need a GeForce GTX 260 216SP 55 nm or better to compare with my HD4870 1gb ddr5.

Price of the hd4870 1Gb ddr5 - $139

At the very minimum, I would get an ATI 5850.

If you can afford to spend $300, then get the 5870.

Without knowing your budget for a card, it's kinda hard to suggest something. Here's my take on it for "gaming/everyday machine":
$80-150: Ati HD 4850/4870 1GB
$140-160: Ati HD 5770 1GB
$275-300: Ati HD 5850 1GB
$300-350: Ati HD 5870 1GB

I'm leaning towards ATI due to their affordable next-gen offerings, which sport lower power consumption (via Powerplay) and DX11. You want DX11 if you're a gamer. Why? Well that's a whole can of worms, but in short, it's future proof. Nvidia is a good brand too, though buck-for-buck (performance/power consumption) as of right now, you get more out of it out of an ATI offering. In my opinion, of course.

Until Fermi is out . .the 5850 and 5870 are kings of the video cards . .
