No way that I'd risk my sons brand new slim, but an interesting development. The comments section at the bottom of the article also make for entertaining reading... |

And what he did was open up the Linux OS (not the ps3s OS) to the ps3s hardware..but its not stable and he said he had no plans of making it to where you can use backups (pirated games) so only thing he has done to a degree is make the ps3 system into a Linux computer.
As far as a ps3 slim doing this..I don't think you can, as Sony locked out the Linux install, so you can't even load Linux on the slim. -- I am hotter than phone sex with a blind girl. |

Hotz wrote on his blog, I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. Ive also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip. He also commented, 3 years, 2 months, 11 days
thats a pretty secure system. |

ThinkdiffPremium,MVM join:2001-08-07 Bronx, NY kudos:4 | AFAIK, there's nothing here that would allow you to run Linux on a Slim. It's not that kind of hack. This is the kind of hack that might or might not lead to other hacks. It could be a complete dead end, who knows. The only thing it gets you is full access to memory in Linux on a fat PS3. It's up to other hackers to dumb that memory and look for other exploits.
And FWIW, this happened about 2-3 weeks ago. Not too long ago. -- University of Southern California - Class of 2010. Fight On! |
