Just need to measure your harddrive thickness. if it's a really old harddrive i would measure it. Although I've never had a problem with thicknesses .. |

yes only 2.5" laptop drives can run in enclosures powered only by usb. 3.5" desktop drives need an enclosure with an ac adapter. |

Well its a modern hard drive maybe 4-5 years old and is 7200 rpm I guess I will measure it just to be safe like you said . Kind of sucks that you need to use the ac cord though , but it will be something ill have to deal with I guess. Do the external hard drives you buy in the stores need ac power? |

Myself and a few friends have bought cheap enclosures, and ran into problems. OS wouldn't recognize the drive, write errors, died in a short time, etc.. Some are just real flaky. For about $20 more, you can pick up a case that uses IDE or SATA, to USB, that you would be able to depend upon. Not saying this one is junk. |

| reply to firefoxguy Yes pretty sure all IDE 3.5 external drives that are already mounted in a case come with AC power. Laptop 2.5 drives can just be used with USB.. as asdfdfdfdfdf mentioned above.
Is there a model name for that case? Maybe do a search on reviews for it. |

I think i have the 2.5" version of that and it has worked fine for quite awhile. In fact it is being backuped(?) to right now. Measure the drive like it says, they don't have room to spare Don't lose the USB cable, you probably don't have a USB A-A laying around as opposed to more common A-B. |

There are generally two types of externals. The 2.5" portable/mobile drives that need no wall wart and the 3.5" desktop type drives that do.
With western digital for example the mybook series is generally 3.5", the passport series is the 2.5" mobile type.
Seagate has the freeagent desktop series and the freeagent Go series.
If you want to buy a new drive and have any doubts you can post back here to check. |

Not that it was broken, it just wasn't there in the molex connector. A new (modern) enclosure fixed that. -- "While you can teach an old dog new tricks, you simply can't teach him to be a cat."
