What's up with that?

Hey, how about the west coast. Many commuters use the Amtrak from Roseville to the Bay Area to commute.

You gotta start somewhere. Amtrak is probably more used in the NE than anywhere else, so it's logical to start here.

It's also the only profitable line in the whole Amtrak system.

The whole penns station to stamford thing, is a bit wierd. There are alot missing service which would get more people on the train.

Also, many Congresscritters from MA, NY, CT, PA, NJ, DE, MD ride the NE corridor trains as they commute to work in Wash,DC. And Amtrak depends greatly on subsidies to keep operating.

I'm a daily commuter to the bay area on the capitol corridor amtrak right now, coming to you via tmo 3g.

There was an amtrak rep on the train one night in Jan, and he gave me the WiFi skinny for the Capitol Corridor.

The capitol corridor train in norcal is actually run by the CCJPA out of Oakland, which made up of the connecting transit agencies like BART.

They have had their test run and chosen provider for train wifi for a while, but the bureaucrats at caltrans dis-allowed the funding for it saying that their pilot program was not caltrans approved. Yay Sacramento.

This dude confirmed that WiFi will be free and coming to at least some of the trains around Q3 this year (however fares are going up in the spring ). He also mentioned that it was going to save some money for the system in inter-train communication that they currently have a vendor for.

Update: I passed the link to this forum along to the amtrak contact on the Capitol Corridor site, and Jim asked that I post this for him:

CCJPA is working very closely with Amtrak for a wifi system for the Northern California fleet. On the heels of the Acela, there is a planned national wifi RFQ and later RFP to go out. We are directly participating in that process since our own CCJPA procurement process was derailed in the State bureaucracy. And we now have identified funding for such a system. So the news is good and working with Amtrak is a good way to get a better coordinated system, reduce some costs, and where CCJPA needs to be given many other electronic and technology initiatives.
