| Any experts in Ubuntu 9.1? Do we have any experts here versed in Ubuntu 9.1? I'm a noobie to UNIX to begin with, and I have a question regarding external modem installation in this distro. Before I go into chapter and verse about it I'd like to know do we have any wizards here?
Thanks to any who respond, and I'll put the details up as soon as I see there's a potential for response. -- Sierra 598U/Cradlepoint CTR500, grid antenna, Millenicom unlimited, 2 LinkSys WiFi a/p, 4 XPPro and 1 Ubuntu units, FireFox everywhere. |

I suspect someone should be able to lend a hand. Go ahead an post your details. It'd be desirable to start a new topic with the issue you're trying to resolve.
btw, it's rare that any issue is distro-specific.

| Same here, I am a veteran at the "nuke and reinstall" technique as well and immunizing against WIN viruses by installing Ubuntu where Windows once was.

| reply to caribconsult said by caribconsult:I have a question regarding external modem installation in this distro. 1) buy any HARDWARE external modem. See »tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO-2.html - you want to avoid any modem that needs a "driver" of any kind. Winmodems are good examples. As a rough guide, if the modem is very inexpensive, it's a softmodem.
2) plug it in

Modems are getting pretty rare these days! -- My place : »www.schettino.us |

| reply to caribconsult To everyone who has posted here, there is a new thread in the UNIX forum about installing the modem pursuant to using EFax, and it's getting to be quite a discussion, so you might want to follow that.
And BTW, I do indeed have a hardware modem. It's a real USRobotics Sportster 56K data/fax unit that connects to COM1. I don't feel any attraction to searching for software drivers for winmodems, especially since I've encountered serious issues with winmodems even in windows. Trying this in UNIX seems like an exercise in self-flagellation. I'm not saying it can't be done; I just don't feel like another challenge when I've already run into a few having nothing to do with the modem. See my other post for more on this.
Thanks again to everyone who took their time to post here. Muchas gracias a todos. -- Sierra 598U/Cradlepoint CTR500, grid antenna, Millenicom unlimited, 2 LinkSys WiFi a/p, 4 XPPro and 1 Ubuntu units, FireFox everywhere. |
