Considering getting oOma to replace MJ

I have had MJ for about a year now and it's been mostly ok.

Lately though, for most of the incoming calls, when I pick up the call, they can hear me but I can't hear them. I ask them to dial back and then it seems to be ok. The quality after the subsequent connect is fine.
My MJ is on a dedicated netbook directly attached to the cable modem.

I suspect it is my ISP, AT&T Uverse, but I have no idea to prove or disprove my hypothesis. Perhaps MJ is more sensitive to flaky ISP connections, and then there is the other link in the chain, the PC that drives MJ.

So, assuming it is my ISP, would oOma do a better job handling ISP issues than MJ does ?

The guys who make STP Oil Treatment used to say something like "This product will not fix mechanical defects in your car".

Same here.

No Voip provider will work well with a poor broadband connection.

(CallCentric and some others may do a better job at getting through Ice Princess routers. But again, NO provider will overcome a bad connection).

Having said that, SOME providers may make things even worse---and sometimes MJ may be one of them.

But why not test your connection at both of these sites:

Good results won't guarantee a good Voip experience, BUT bad results WILL guarantee a BAD experience.

Along those lines, to which site would you do the tests or does it make any difference ?

Where is the closest one to MJ's headquarters, that is where is MJ located ?

thanks,

I'd do the tests to a location near to you.

You are not necessarily seeking to generate a bad result. Rather, you want to see IF your system can generate a GOOD result!

If you can't get a GOOD result to a nearby location, then you will not get a good result anywhere!

As for MJ, they have many, many points of presence through their YMAX CLEC.

Why do you suspect it is your ISP? Have you run any line quality tests?

as you troubleshoot, be aware that simply connecting your MJ device to a PC will cause the installation of MJ's advertising software to that device. there is no UNINSTALL routine included with the software. use discretion prior to "trying" your MJ on PCs of friends and at work.

Here are some results from Houston, TX to Austin, TX:

Ping ---DL--- ---UL---
47ms 48.09m .94m
48ms 5.13m .94m
48ms 123.69m .94m
47ms 66.23m .94m
47ms 79.99m .94m
48ms 93.52m .94m

I wonder why the DL speeds fluctuate all over the place.
And I don't know if it's the ISP or what. Just trying to narrow it down. But it seems that yesterday when the phone calls were horrible, other I-Net performance was also flaky.
Specifically:
PC-1, was playing I-Tunes oldies and had numerous pauses.
PC-2 was downloading videos with many pauses.

Could be I am overloading the I-Net.

Still I wonder why the big variances in the DL speeds and would that have an effect on MJ.

thanks

That's a good point Rocky.

I was just upstairs checking on the dedicated PC and it had a stupid pop-up window from Adobe (I think).
I guess I had better take a look at it once in a while.
I thought I had removed everything that I thought wasn't needed.
Bastards !!

Ooma does have the definite advantage that it is stand-alone- no need to have a PC constantly running in order to make or receive calls.

If the problem lies within your ISP services, no VoSPs can help, let alone Ooma that requires a hefty investment and whose existence to survive in the near future is in question. Your best option is to get a SIP complaint ATA and configure it with any BYOD to see if the call quality will be better. Along the way, make your own comparison calls between the ATA and MJ to the same many different destinations. This way, you will know your answer without a hefty investment on Ooma. At the end, if your findings default to MJ's fault and will decide to get Ooma, then you can either resale the ATA or use it with some free VoSPs, i.e. Gizmo5 (G5), CallCentric, etc.

MJ provides an uninstall routine from their support site.

I haven't used it. I don't know how thorough it is.

Have you run speed test for your ISP?
To use ooma hub, you need the upload speed over 100 kbps (read ooma forum posts). It's confirmed by several users. some user's ISP is Wireless "Clear" (?), its upload speed is just 100 ~130 kbps, and as low as 60 kbps. At that bandwidth, very bad ooma audio quality reported. ooma has no options on audio codec. so g729 is not a fix for ooma. but Clear user reported voip phone using g729 running just fine.

U-verse tries to use ancient copper twisted pairs to your house from a not-so-nearby VRAD to push far higher data rates than can be had. Lots of retransmitted packets due to bit error rates. And overall crappy design concept becuase AT&T was trying to compete with cable modems which benefit from wideband coax to your house. And with Verizon's FIOS. AT&T (SBC renamed) is all marketing BS and no honest products.
