Drivers and old video cards, and, well, question

Hey guys. I have a question involving gaming video cards, their drivers, and obsolescence.

I am wondering if it is a bad idea to keep updating drivers on an old card because they might have the new drivers actually reducing performance instead of improving it, vis a vis getting people to upgrade.

I have a 7950GT and I am hesitant to update the driver for it.

it has happened before...sometimes new drivers will degrade performance slightly....had it happen to me...i just rolled back the driver, problem fixed......gohead and upgrade the driver....if it causes you problems, rollback to the old one.....

but if it was me, and if it works fine, i wouldnt bother....not like its a dx11 card....any improvements that were capable should already be made/found....

Look at the release notes. Usually after a while, performance tweaks for a card no longer are present. Either the card reached its full potentional with the drivers or that a new video card has come around and no longer the focus point. At that time, I just look for compatibility and bug fixes and take performance hit a consideration.

In the end, you want the latest drivers possible, but if there's a major issue you notice, roll back.

....but my golden rule with ANYTHING on a PC.....if it is working well, don't change it, no matter what

Once I have a system running well, I rarely touch a thing. There are a few exceptions, but I think lots of people just update stuff for the sake of updates.

'If it's not broke, don't fix it'

Great motto concerning updating drivers.

If there is an issue that is addressed by this update that you suffer from, then update.

Otherwise, don't bother.
