Looking for this in a music player

a) Monkey's Audio, FLAC, and wavpack support.

only MPD seems to support all three out of the box in a simple fashion but lacks B, E, and D.

b) support for cue sheets.

c) Its own volume control. Not control over the PCM attribute in alsamixer, I mean its own software volume control(like aqualung).

ALSA only allows PCM volume to go down to -50.80 dB. I have my DAC plugged directly into my power amp, this is too loud for nighttime listening, and I hate getting up going behind the amp and turning the trim pots down only to turn them back up during the day. Aqualung has its own software volume control, but lacks support for monkey's audio and cuesheets

d) Ability to drag and drop files from the filesystem.

No, not add them from a preconceived library using the program's own interface, like you are FORCED to with Gimmix and Gnome Music player client, I mean honestly dragging a file from thunar or nautilus into the player, or double clicking it and having it begin playing or showing up in a playlist. Sometimes I just want to listen to a file without changing its folder or adding it to my library at that particular time.

e) support for cuesheets embedded in .wv wavpack files.

None of the mentioned players seem to have this

These are the basic features I have become accustomed to, using foobar2000 for windows. I've tried many players and feel none of them live up to the basic standard I had for a media player for over seven years on the windows platform, and am hoping to find something that changes this.

With the possible exception of your "drag and drop" requirement, Audacious should meet your needs. I'd imagine other music players would, as well. There are a number of fully featured media players for Linux.

I believe Banshee comes very close. Not sure about wavepack cuesheets, though.

Maybe qmmp:
»code.google.com/p/qmmp/
»code.google.com/p/qmmp/wiki/qmmp_packages

It should support the 3 file types you mentioned, including cue sheets, it has a software volume control, and you can drag and drop files onto the playlist area for playback.

All close, but no cigar. Linux has such a long way to come with multimedia.

I'll give qmmp a try, thanks. The day I can retire WINE & foobar2000 will be a grand one.

Out of curiosity, what is Banshee lacking in?

Uh, Amarok.

Yea, Amarok should handle everything just fine.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, just because there is no exact clone of foobar2000 in Linux doesn't make your statement true.

Perhaps you could explain what is lacking from the provided program examples that cause Linux to lack so much in the multimedia arena. It may be possible they aren't actually missing a feature.

Some of your requirements, such as "double clicking it and having it begin playing" are a function of the file manager and not any specific media player.

Uh, Amarok.
The last time I used amarok it would start every FLAC file 20 seconds in. It was a bug I read a few posts about. It also requires a ridiculous amount of KDE libs, but the FLAC nonsense sealed the deal on me.

Banshee will not play a thing. No audio output. However, it does register playing FLAC and MP3 files. Even if it did output audio as mplayer, mpd, and aqualung did with no configuraiton required, it does not even touch the wavpacks, much less display cuesheets! So it would be useless.

A lot of MPD frontends will not let you drag music in, much less start playing from a double click. You have to hit a button to add it from a library folder. This was my experience with Gimmix and GMPC. If there is a way to drag and drop music from other folders in, they've done a good job of making this unintuitive.

Dragging files in can be done easily with PYMP(and just about every other normal music player), but PYMP lacks many of the other features.

I must be retarded but I cannot find out how to simply drag and drop a file from the file manager into banshee and have it play. It seems to want me to import my media then play it from there. Even after I gave it a folder.

Aqualung comes closest here. I am not crippled by alsa's having -51 being the bottom of the volume control, I have wavpack, APE, and FLAC playback, I can drag files in to play. The only problem being it doesn't seem to acknowledge cuesheets.

A six year old version of foobar2000 in wine still kills every native program.

+1

Scriptable, fully featured, nice GUI, supports playlists, and the list goes on. It has a nice equalizer too, which was something I was accustomed to in Winamp. I actually like Amarok better than Winamp. Any player that is codec based like Amarok can play pretty much any audio format thrown at it, provided you downloaded and installed the codecs.

Is the problem of it starting every FLAC file at the 20 second mark & ruining itself seeking through FLAC files fixed? I'd try it myself but the amount of KDE libs I have to compile to find out is a slight deterrent.

In the amarok audio settings, which just open the kde sound settings, pick the phonon backend that works best. If you're using GNOME then you'll have pulseaudio which in turn means you have gstreamer which might cause issues. Amarok works best with the xine backend. If it does work ok for you with gstreamer be aware of the sinks needed to play certain file formats.

I see you just replied with gentoo. I don't have amarok currently installed due to the mysql-5.1 vs. embedded issue that is awaiting a fix from oracle so I can't test the exact setup you need without running amarok with a dedicated mysql server up... which I don't want to do.

Are you on gentoo stable or ~ ?

Don't worry about that, Gentoo's pretty much all I use. IIRC I have amarok installed, but I don't have anything in the audio formats you're looking for. When I get a chance I can check the rest.

For your formats, you'd need ffmpeg (for ape), flac, and wavpack USE flags, plus whatever else applies to your system. I didn't see a specific USE flag for ffmpeg to enable ape support, so I'm not sure that the format isn't supported by default.

If nothing else, qmmp is very light because it only needs qt and not all of kde, so it wouldn't take so long to compile as amarok if you just want to try it.

I know if you right-click a folder (or audio file) and choose "Open With Banshee" it will not import it to your music library, but will instead add it to the File System Queue. This allows you to play and queue music without importing it. (Make sure you have the "File System Queue" extension enabled.)

Whatever GStreamer codecs you have installed are used by Banshee, so it should be able to support pretty much most audio formats. I am able to play FLAC, OGG, and MP3 without any issues at all.

I really can't say because I've never had that issue. Then again, as others have said, I have always had it configured to use the xine backend. I have always had the KDE libs installed(I like some other KDE apps, even though I don't use the Desktop Environment much anymore), so that part wasn't an issue for me.

Why would anyone? Not the easiest distro for a beginner to learn from, but very stable, in my experience. I also like the idea that all software updates compile themselves via emerge, provided you aren't trying to run it on a Pentium III.

Edit: If you get the issue, even when using xine, then file a bug report. That is the only way to get the community to work on it. Given variances in hardware and software environments, one bug that may affect one person may not affect another. It may only rear its ugly head in specific circumstances. When you file a report, not only are you hopefully getting your issue fixed, but are also helping the community perfect its software. This is not M$, the open source community actually looks to the users for feedback.
