Re: keyboard mod explained w/pics

then our next step---removing the keys. this is done by GENTLY squeezing the tabs that hold them in with needle-nose pliers.

after you remove ALL the keys, you drill your holes in the board. i did it from the front, and made sure i could lay the ELF straight across with no obstructions.

you lay the ELF across the board, so it lands between the keys. on the back, you pull it tight and tie the ELF in a knot to hold it. you can also use glue to hold it to the board. any glue that works on plastics should work, but test it first. i know testors model cement didn't work, so choose wisely .

.....and the finished product. you can see where to route the wire for the most part. i'm sure you'll figure it out .

one more note----the transformer is too big to fit in most keyboards, so i used an x-acto knife to widen the hole that the keyboard wire comes out of. i then ran the ELF next to the keyboard wire, and electric taped the transformer to the wire. i also covered the ELF that was sticking out the back of the keyboard with electric tape so light isn't seen under my desk from it. i hope this helps some of you who want to do this cool-looking mod.(Psychephylax):D

ELF is electroluminescent fiber. it's available from street glow. the kit you want is the 15 foot kit. everything you need is in the kit(ELF, Transformer), except a power supply. i used an old cordless phone power supply for my 12 volt needs. i cut the jack off and wired it to the transformer. use a multimeter to make sure you get + and - correct, or it won't light. as a matter of fact, you might want to check the kit to see if it works before installing it!!!

the tools you need are as follows:
1) phillips head screwdriver
2) drill and 3/16" bit.
3) glue of your choice
4) lots of patience

LOL---the part that plugs into the wall and converts 120 volts to 12 volts.

the ELF itself produces very little heat, if any. the transformer gets warm to the touch after a few hours, but you can still hold it. i don't know why you would want to hold it, but you can if you want

I'm new at this electronics and modding stuff. I need the cord and the part it goes into...looks like a metal box with a wire wrapped around it a million times?

this is what you need to power the transformer. just make sure where it says "output" it says 12vdc (12 volts direct current)

OH!!! OK! How does this connect to the ELF? Do I have to cut the plug off or does it plug right in? I have probably a dozen of these laying around.

that's what you cut the jack off of. the wires from that go to the 12 volt input on the transformer. the other end of the transformer has 2 clips that connect to the ELF.
