ztmikeMark for moderationPremium join:2001-08-02 Michigan City, IN | Nvidia GTX 470 question Well okay I got my new system put together and sadly the onboard isn't as great as people make it out to be ..(ATI 4290) It lagged on L4D2 so, I'm looking to purchase a GTX 470. But my question is:
Couldn't I just buy this one »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14130550
And overclock it to where this one is at and save the extra money? »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···14130549
O and I was going to go with the ATI 5850 but ATI doesn't support PhysX and well..how can a gamer NOT have that? So that's my reason going with Nvidia and the GTX 470 seems to be the sweet spot. |

a new fermi is a vast diffrence from onboard.....
what other games do you play? l4d2 isnt as intensive as other games...and it certainly doesnt need a fermi....something like a 260 would do just fine.....im running one now...granted im looking to upgrade to a 5850, but still, you can find one on the forums for cheap.... |

Some games I want to play use PhsyX. I figured the ATI 4290 could play L4D2 but it can't so I want to upgrade to the 470..as far as not needing that much power..I actually do because I want to play other games that would require it.
And it looks like the 470 I linked to in my OP is cheaper than the Asus 5850 or about the same price.
As far as my question I just got it answered here »www.overclock.net/nvidia/767429-···ion.html
So..nevermind. |

MrPremium join:2002-12-25 | reply to ztmike First and foremost, PhysX is nothing special...Just so you should know, its not implemented in all games and i personally see no use for it. That being said, the 5850 is an amazing card for the price, however the 470 is not a bad deal anyways, if i were you though i would get the superclocked version anyways, being as it factory overclocked thus more reliable and stable. If you plan on playing new games at 1080p then either the 470 or 5850 are your best bet. Just make sure you find the best price possible. Also if you have a crossfire motherboard, two 5770 are cheaper than a 470 and a 5850 and will outperform them. Or even two 4890 will outperform a 5870. And most games these days support crossfire. Thats just my 2 cents. |

| reply to ztmike Wait a second... you're buying a $350 video card to run L4D2 because your on-board graphics can't do it?
Based on what the Nvidia site says, PhysX is implemented for six "current games: Batman: Arkham Asylum, Darkest of Days, Sacred 2 - Fallen Angel, Dark Void, Cryostasis, and Mirror's Edge.
I would suggest two 5770s in Crossfire, and overclocked, if that's your thing. But really, one is just fine if all you are playing is L4D2.

MchartFirst There. join:2004-01-21 Gurnee, IL 1 edit | reply to ztmike The GTX 470 is the better buy if you can find it for 5850 prices. Which you can right now on Newegg. It's slightly faster in most games / benchmarks, and has the obvious PhysX and CUDA support as well.
There is no reason to waste money on overclocked editions. You won't need to overclock the GTX 470 either. It will play every game on the market at max settings no issue, unless you have a 30'' display with an ultra high resolution.
As for people reccomending a Crossfire/SLI solution over a single 5850/GTX 470 - No. Just no.
Anyone who has had experiance with dual GPU setups knows the issues. It isn't worth it. |

MchartFirst There. join:2004-01-21 Gurnee, IL 1 edit | said by kvn864:just get 5770 or 5850.. Once again, the GTX470 can be had for 5850 prices now anyways. Both cards are remarkably similar in current gaming performance. The GTX470 tends to do better in the benchmarks where features like Tessellation are heavily used. The 5850 uses less power and runs less hot.
It depends on the needs, and it depends on the person. However, for the same price, my personal opinion is that the GTX470 is the better buy. That said, if you can't find one for the same price, then the 5850 being $50 cheaper is the better buy. However, a quick search on Newegg will indicate that there are GTX470's selling for $300 w/ free shipping (And RE5). -- THIS IS SPENCER. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED - I HAVE JOE. RETURNING TO BASE. |

It's not as hot as people like to say. For a gaming rig, I have no problem with more heat. The only reason I would purchase a 5850 over the GTX470 for the same price is if I were building a HTPC and needed a passive setup.
The bottom line is that if you have a typical Mid/Full tower with typical cooling, the heat difference between a 5850 and a GTX470 seems like a null factor. It's not like the GTX470 runs by such a substantial amount hotter that it requires one to redo the thermal design of their case. |

Is UPS shipping stuff this Monday with the holiday on Sunday? O and I found the evga gtx 470 non superclocked on Amazon for still the price of $329+free ship but sadly I HATE Amazons shipping times. Its pathetic to say the least. Can't beat Neweggs shipping, and half the reason why I buy from them even if their more expensive.
I do have a question for you guys though, can I still overclock the superclocked edition? And if I do will that void my lifetime warranty with evga? |
|
MchartFirst There. join:2004-01-21 Gurnee, IL | You can overclock it without them voiding the warranty. Even the non overclocked cards from them can be overclocked without voiding the warranty. This is why it's typically not reccomended to lay down the cash for a factory overclocked card. The overclock isn't substantial enough (Meaning you will see a 5% performance gain at most in benchmarks), and they are still using the same equipment.
I do think it is a better idea to get the card from a company like EVGA though. The extra 30 bucks is worth the better warranty. |
