 | Linksys WRT54GL w/ Tomato Crashing Regularly I have a five month old Linksys WRT54G flashed with the most recent version of Tomato (1.28) and recently have noticed it crashing at least once a day. When it locks up nothing works, neither wireless nor wired.
When I go in to check the logs (after unplugging/replugging) the logs seem to be erased except for the startup sequence with dates of Dec 31 for about thirty lines then switching to the current date and time.
The bandwidth logs also seem to be erased.
The only change that I have made to the default settings was to boost the transmit power up to 70 from the default of 42. Otherwise everything else is as provided (aside from the DNS and wireless security settings).
Any idea how I can troubleshoot this or does anyone know what might be causing the router to lock up? |

|
 | Actually it was happening even before the flash I did yesterday. I flashed it from 1.27 to 1.28 yesterday hoping that it might solve the problem (it didn't). It work's fine for 1-2 days at a time but then randomly crashes. Can't tell what is happening before the freeze because it wipes out the logs when I restart it.
No I did not clean the RAM, not too sure how to do that. Wouldn't unplugging/replugging the power to the unit clean the RAM anyway? |

Be aware that resetting the router will return on values to default. |

|
 | reply to MaestroC I have this same issue, just upgraded a new WRT54GL to Tomato 1.28. Will clear NVRAM to see it will fix the issue and report back. |
|
 | reply to Phil I did the reset as described and it seems to have worked as promised. Thanks for the help! |

»192.168.1.1/admin-config.asp
and under "Restore Default Configuration"
select "Erase all data in NVRAM memory (thorough)
Should accomplish the same thing. |
|
 | I did just that, so far so good. No restarts in the past 2 days but will keep a eye on it. |
|
 | reply to MaestroC I guess the clearing of the NVRAM did NOT work after all. The router is still locking up although it seems to be taking a bit longer between lock ups than before. When it freezes I cannot even get to it via the 192.168.1.1 address. I still have to unplug the router which also clears the logs.
Is there a way to save the logs somewhere that I will be able to retrieve them after a crash? I see that Tomato lets me log to a remote system but I have no idea how to set this up.
Also, anyone have other ideas for how to troubleshoot this lockup issue?

do you have that right power supply? 12v 1amp?
do you have an power issues modem needing restart, lights kicking off or dimming alot?
could try moving the modem and router to another room and circuit.
could try pluging your computer straight in to the modem for 3 days plus see if there is any issuse.

I'm using the power adapter that came with the unit. do you have an power issues modem needing restart, lights kicking off or dimming alot? The lights (so far as I can tell) are not dimming. In fact, even when the router is locked up the lights continue to flash as if traffic is going through. could try moving the modem and router to another room and circuit. Doing so would be difficult due to the wired Ethernet connections but will try it if nothing else works. could try pluging your computer straight in to the modem for 3 days plus see if there is any issuse. what version of WRT54G do you have? 1.1 WRT54GL |

what sort of modem do you have? |
|
 | The modem is a Motorola SB5101 SURFBoard cable modem. Have been running this setup for around 6 months or so. The problem only started about one month ago.
I have not made any changes to the router, modem, or service provider.
Can the connected devices ever cause a crash of the router? I have two wired windows machines, a wireless macbook, and two iphones using this router. I thought I had heard somewhere that occasionally Apple products can mess with things (unless you are using an Airport of course). Now that I think of it the problems did seem to start around the same time the new iPhone OS4 came out... Any chance this might be part of the problem? Just throwing out ideas... |
|
 | reply to TX CS Aggie In regard to the iPhone thing, I did a quick search for "iphone crashes router" and the first thing that came up was this:
»modmyi.com/forums/general-iphone···ius.html
It talks about linksys WRT54G routers crashing when an iPhone leaves the Wi-Fi radius. Their fix is to set the iPhone to use a static IP address. Does this make any sense to you? The forum post on it is three years old but there are others more recent (even relating to the new iPad in some cases). |

also make sure the NAT-PMP is enable it is used for Mac port forwarding.
it all sounds pretty weird to me.
BTW: your modem is fine I thought you might be on some sort of weird dial up or DSL. -- BEFCMU10 v4 -Cable Modem WRT54GS v4 - Tomato (primary) WRT54G v6 - DD-WRTmicro (Parents Primary) WRT54G v2.2 - Tomato (Grand Parent Primary) WNHDE111 - 5GHz Bridge-AP (beta firmware v1.3.3)(Xbox360) |

 | reply to MaestroC Clearing the NVRAM did not work for me also, router is back to 11h uptime with all logs deleted. Router seems to reboot when I leave my house to go to work... |
|
 | reply to MaestroC I find tomato to be much more stable with the new driver build (1.28 ND). I have 2 WRT54GLs - one runs the standard build fine, the other one crashes every few days on the standard build. My WRT54G-TM (GL with extra ram) also crashes periodically on the standard build. After upgrading the unstable ones to the 1.28 ND build, it's been stable ever since except for power outages. |
|
 | So the WRT54GL can run the 1.28 ND builds just fine? Anything different from the normal build? |
