[ps3] Standard DVD's on PS3

I have a lot of standard DVD's, but don't watch DVD's very often. However, when I do occasionally watch standard DVD's, I would like as good picture quality as possible.

Will the new, slim PS3's provide very good picture quality with standard DVD's? I'll be using it with a 46" Sony EX500 (1080p).

I know not to expect HD quality, but will the DVD's look as good, if not better, then watching a DVD on a CRT with a regular DVD player?

I'm just trying to get an idea on if the PS3 will be more than suitable in providing great picture quality for standard DVD's on a new 1080p LCD.

Thank you so much!

Yes you will get a better DVD picture due to the upscaling it does to the picture. I saw a very noticeable difference compared to my DVD player back when I got the PS3. Now I have a big screen HD television and I'm still amazed at the difference. Sometimes I'm hard pressed to think I'm seeing HD quality (especially the Pixar DVDs).

Obviously DVDs won't give you HD quality no matter how good the upscaling is, but man the PS3 sure does give you the best that ole' format can give.

I agree, the upscaling on the PS3 is excellent!

Another vote up, PS3 is one of (if not the...) best upscaler from SD to HD.

As others have said, the PS3's DVD upscaling is outstanding, and it's as close to HD as you'll get without blu-ray. I still cannot justify paying $25-30 for a blu-ray movie when the difference is so minimal on the PS3. It's upscaling capabilities really make blu-ray look like a rip-off.

Anyone who has ever asked me for my opinion on buying a blu-ray player, I have advised to just buy a PS3 and keep buying DVDs. Pretty soon physical media will be dead anyway so why waste time and money on another generation of it.

You need to shop around. I recently bought a nice blu-ray movie for $10. I see several on sale for $15-$20. As far as I'm concerned unless you're getting a massive special edition multi-disk (as in more than two) set you shouldn't buy a Blu-Ray movie for more than $20. Even then I hesitate when there are deals to be found.

I find that blu-ray is better than an upscaled standard, but I only rent or do netflix so it doesnt really matter to me the cost of the physical media.

Actually the ps3 does do a decent job of upscaling, but will only do so over HDMI; same with the Xbox 360. Irritatingly, neither console will go beyond 480p on component video, even though the cables are mechanically capable of passing a 1080p feed.

Even so, I find myself preferring the 360, because... even though I find the color accuracy of upscaled movies on the PS3 a slight better, the 360 is much more flexible about what region and source of DVD's it will play. Even movies that I re-author from PAL to NTSC to play, the ps3 won't touch any of them. The 360 however, will even play PAL DVD's without worry.

Okay that's really a stretch since most of the DVD owning public generally only buy from the region they live in. Also the PS3 can play all region PAL DVD's fine from what I have seen. Home grown DVDs I can't vouch for, but it may depend on a few techinical things. So this really only applies if aporawks has a lot of DVDs out of region.

I was able to get my hands on some jeremy clarkson dvd's, which are obviously from uk (which is pal). Even when ripping and recoding from pal to ntsc via nero recode, the ps3 refuses to start them up, throwing up some stupid error at me. The 360 will even play the original disc in original formatting just fine.

Was that DVD all region or region free? I have played two region free PAL DVDs that worked fine on the PS3. One is the video disk for Rewind: The Best of Camouflage and one is the video disk for Talk Talk: Natural History. Also both are imports from the U.K. Go figure.

Nope.

But then again, given this, why is it that the 360 will play them but the ps3 won't? Even moreso when I rip and recode them for NTSC.

Doesn't make sense to me, but that's what happens.

I didn't know they even still made those. CRT HD was hot stuff back in 2005, but I think there's a reason you don't see them sold these days. Try the comparison on a newer HD television with a contrast ratio larger than 500,000.1.

LCDs/plasmas can not do Yellows good as CRT's

Dynamic contrast is not the same as real contrast more likely it's only 1000:1 ratio

it's just a e-pens thing

I had a LCD with a Dynamic contrast of 40000 to 1
real contrast was only 1000:1 ratio (was $1,000 at the time)
( me and my bro went 1/2 on it)
it sucked i could not see a damn thing when gaming

took it back and got a used CRT best money I ever spent!

got a nice 30" HD Trinitron 1920*1080i [W I D E S C R E E N] with HDMI

supports 480i/p 720p 1080i @24hz(not as bad as it sounds) 30hz & 60Hz input
only paid $150 for it

i should be able to resell it for 150 easy when i upgrade to the 36" XBR Trinitron CRT HD TV

the sound is amazing on the 36"/34" XBR Trinitron CRT HD TV 16:9
i going to ask my Uncle if I can buy it from him

he's planing on getting a LCD screen soon

Sorry to hear your LCD/Plasma experiences were bad. I have one of those Samsung LED backlit high def LCD TVs and the contrast and color is amazing. It's also 52" so I don't know how viable that size is for CRT (including cost). I'm generally against using sound as part of my decision to purchase a TV. Running sound through a good external system will always beat out TV speakers. If you don't already have a receiver and nice surround speakers yet I recommend it.

I got a $200 HTIB

I did replace the speakers with larger ones (book shelf type)

the Sound on his tv was still better, the TV has a built in sub for "2.1 "

Acoustics also come into play also
