What should my fan RPM be?

Sony Vaio Desktop

E5400 dual core processor

One of the fans on my desktop is running loud. I sent my computer back to Sony. They replaced the fan. The issue remains.

When I boot the computer, the fan RPMs are at about 2200 RPM. After about 3 hours the RPM is at 3,800 but the temperature of the cores remain at 36 and 38.

Undervolting won't help.

Someone suggested changing the settings of Smart Fan in the BIOS. Does anyone know how to do this?

Why is my fan RPM higher even though the temperature of the Cores is constant?

As you use the computer, the processor does more work. As it does work, it heats up. As it heats up, the fan has to spin faster to keep the target temperature.

It sounds like you have a small fan on your CPU, you may want to see if you can utilize an aftermarket heat spreader / fan and get a larger fan, which will move more air at slower speeds.

The temperature staying at 38 has to do with the fan increasing in speed, right?

A larger heatsink/fan setup, say 120mm, will spin slower, but also it is lower pitched.

Now you don't say what fan it is, is it that CPU heatsink's fan? A case fan?

Do you understand a fan moves more air when it spins faster which cools better, so if the CPU works harder it warms up and the fan counters that, thanks to sensors, by speeding up.

Also, what software are you using for the temperature? Temp readings can be innacurate, partly due to sensing software errors.

I don't knon what is going on.

Since the fan has been replaced, the problem has gotten worse.

I don't do anything that would tax the processor. I just surf the internet.

After one hour, the RPM on my fans are up to 3357 and 3456 from 2139 and 2985

Before, it would take hours to reach this speed.

I don't think it is a hardware issue.

BTW, in HWMonitor (the program I am using to monitor), the fans are labeled "CPU" and "Front"

I don't know if this can help solve the problem.

When I put the computer into "Sleep" mode and then one second later, come out of it, the fan goes back down to 2,200 RPM (from 3,800 before going into sleep mode).

Could this indicate anything?

2200 RPM for a cpu fan sounds high to me ... at the moment (at idle) my desktop fan is moving at 958 RPM, at 50% load it becomes audible at around 1600 RPM, at near full load is is loud at 2200 RPM. IMO the only time your CPU fan should be running that fast is when it's at full load.

Is there a BIOS setting for the fan or a Sony plug in to allow regulation of the speed? My stock Intel CPU fan runs at variable speeds based on load (my guess is more on CPU temp than actual load). Maybe your CPU has poor ventilation? Could there be a lot of dust inside or blocking a vent?

When I enter the BIOS, there are two settings for the fans. There is no option to change them.

I was told Sony does not allow access to those setting in their computer. A big reason I regret buying a Sony computer.

I too the computer back to Sony and they replaced the fan. Nothing has changed.

When the fans ramp up, open the task manager and see what the cpu usage is.

I had a similar problem and found software that was constantly keeping my cpu at 50% even at idle.

You do have decent air circulation around the computer? It is not enclosed in some odd space with poor air circulation?

One thing causing the fan to run at a high RPM is playing Mahjong Titans (Windows 7 game, not a lot of graphics).

This computer has an E5300 Dual Core processor. Could the low quality processor be the issue?

I don't think a low graphics game like that should cause a lot of CPU usage. Have you installed the Windows 7 All CPU Meter gadget on your desktop? This lets me know how my CPU and memory are behaving.
