| Free UK DIDs from numbergroup Recently when I called a 03 number in the UK I discovered that voip.ms doesn't route calls to these numbers. I didn't know much about these numbers so I had to do a bit of research. As it turns out these aren't special numbers, they are a new "UK-wide" type of number that Ofcom has been allocating since 2007. You can call them from ALMOST any provider and they cost the same to call as normal 01 and 02 numbers (geographic landline numbers).
While I was looking I discovered a UK provider called Numbergroup.com (»www.numbergroup.com/content/Home.html) that is giving out free DIDs for 01, 02 and 03 numbers. What is nice is that they can forward to a SIP URI. I'm sure this provider isn't news to many of you so... my question(s) are:
Has anyone else here used them?
What has your experience been like?
I kind of like the idea of the 03 number and I don't know if it just because of how far they are through giving out the numbers but the choices to pick from seemed really nice and easy to remember. |

Yesterday I ordered a DID, 03XXXXXXXXX, from Numbergroup.com. I found such a good easy-to-remember number I could not resist, it is impossible to forget the number. 
As I mapped it to my VoIP.ms SIP address the invoice for my new 03 DID was £0.00 including VAT. Quite a good purchase. 
My order confirmation said "We will be processing your order very soon". Today a few minutes ago a very nice and polite guy from Numbergroup called me on my new DID to inform me that my new DID now is connected and ready to use. That's really an excellent service considering I pay nothing for my new DID, I don't even pay for receiving calls.
The sound quality of the call was excellent, the best I ever experienced. It was so good sound quality it could compete with G722. Crystal clear sound with no background noise, no echo, no jitter.

I assume you already have ordered a DID. 
In my order, I didn't put in any SIP Address to forward to and left it empty. I figured it probably has its own SIP server with a SIP Address that one can configure on his/her ATA device or a PBX system.

Calls from VoIP.ms produced a busy signal and calls from Callcentric resulted in dead air at both ends.
Calls from the other six providers went through without any problem.
However, my test revealed large differences in call quality among the six providers, ranging from poor to very good.

Callcentric was pretty quick to fix the rates for 03 numbers when I brought a problem to their attention. If you let them know about the problem you have making the call I suspect they would try to fix it fairly quickly. I don't (yet) use Callcentric and wasn't able to use them to make a test call.
I had opened a ticket about the voip.ms problem but they think that the number is "premium" and they don't route premium calls. So I just opened a feature request that they should support 03 numbers as normal "non-premium" numbers.

I believe it is the carriers used by VoIP.ms not knowing UK 03 numbers now are ordinary land-lines.
There are still carriers believing that the land-line number range +4610XXXXXXX is a cell phone number range and thus charging a lot higher rate than they should do.

My number is so easy-to-remember that I would be prepared to pay a subscription fee in order to keep it.

| Thanks for the lead Arne. I signed up for one that will be easy to find also... with just a bit of thought. I had to change it from pointing to voip.ms (always busy) to a sip address on one of my local machines.
