7 people have keys to reboot Internet

If this wasn't for real it would be hilarious, unfortunately, it is true ! Ever heard of Burkina Faso ? i hadn't. Can you imagine if it needed a reboot, due to "some incident/s however caused", and if this "coincided" with some "natural" disaster/s and/or man made one/s, ie war/agression/threats/sabotage/false flag etc etc.

How the hell could a 100% guarantee be made that at least 5 of the 7 people would be able to ALL meet up in one place to insert these keys ? Tell you what, i smell a rotten fish, and i can guess why it's instigated this way. ( Oh sorry due to circumstances "beyond our control" we are unable to get together the minimum of 5. Please standby for further details, if and when it becomes available ) In the meantime keep watching/listening/reading to mainstream media, and the emergency broadcast networks, for all you "NEED" to know !

Think i'm wrong ? We'll see, and i bet it won't be too long either !

Seven People Have Been Entrusted With The Keys To The Internet

A minimum of five of the seven keyholders – one each from Britain, the U.S., Burkina Faso, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, China, and the Czech Republic – would have to converge at a U.S. base with their keys to restart the system and connect eveything once again.

ICANN appoints Paul M Kane, CEO, CommunityDNS, as one of seven Trusted Community Representatives ("TCR") from the global community, holding two identical smart cards safeguarding the encrypted cryptographic fragment of the Recovery Key for the DNSSEC signing Key used to sign the ROOT Zone.

Oops invalid cert !

Not very good for a www that has just had one out of 7 people in the WHOLE world entrusted with an Internet reboot key.

Or they can just do it the other way. Make a few hardware and software modifications to the facility and turn it on themselves. C'mon, you think a couple of plastic key cards is going to make a difference when you have control of the facility?

Opera didn't like that cert either. Plus, it's from GoDaddy! UGH!

"A second key ceremony will take place in a second secure facility in Los Angeles in early July. By having two complete and independent facilities available, ICANN is able to ensure that key ceremonies can continue to occur in the event of an unexpected disaster in one location. Scheduled key ceremonies will take place four times annually, with two occurring in each location. Full deployment of DNSSEC in the root zone, using the key first generated in Culpeper, is scheduled to take place on July 15, 2010. Extensive documentation and related information about the project can be found at "

I get it, if you are a TCR and chosen each time you can get a trip four times a year. Follow the business trips, sorry vacations.

It's not "keys to the internet", it's only DNS. Important yes, but not essential to communications.

The five-of-seven would have to be assembled only if a disaster struck and took out the key store. And if three of seven died, the damage would be only replacement of the root key - unfortunate and it would impose a lot of cost on DNS operators all over the world, but not unfixable.

Doesn't this make for an excellent plot of the next spy thriller movie? Who is Killing the Great Key Holders of the Internet? Maybe it should be shortened to The Key Killers.

That's even better, and Leslie Nielsen could star. It would be better as a comedy than as a pure thriller.

Dragonball KEYS.

You've got to search the earth to collect each of the 7 keys to the internet. Once gathered together, you perform the correct chant, and an amazing dragon appears to grant you your wish. You use it to reboot the internet.

That could be an on-line game, couldn't it? There seems to be no end to the possibilities. If there is money to be made from the concept, someone will do it.

I can imagine Alex Jones had a field day with this ("OMG the interwebz is in the hands of 7 mysterious people -- must be the illuminati working with the aliens.") Unfortunately for Mr. Jones the truth is nowhere nearly as exciting or dramatic as that. Bruce Schneier's blog covers this pretty well and some of the comments give some nice insight as to how this all really works.

I don't think the level of education has anything to do with knowing that Upper Valta changed its name in 1984 unless you were in school at that time, or shortly before or after, and didn't learn your geography. It might have more to do with not watching the boob tube instead of obsessing about never missing the 6 o'clock news.

If you've heard of the game "Garry's Mod," you could easily make such a game mode. Make people join, try and find the keys to the Internet before it destroys the planet for not being rebooted. Though right now in that game, if you want the key to crashing the server (well, two keys) at least, what you need is a server slot, and the Stacker STool.

Interesting how nobody thinks the cert problem on someones DNS etc www, who has just been selected and trusted with a key to reboot the Internet, matters ? If we can't trust his DNS etc www to be on the ball with sorting out it's cert professionally and on time, what chance him losing the key, forgetting his passport, or missing his plane, etc etc ?

And that VERY nasty and uncalled for comment is a True reflection on yours. Quite frankly i'm surprised at you. I hope you don't treat your customers/family, and friends if you have any, like that ? Of course ALL the people you know all know exactly where Burkina Faso is, and that it used to be called Upper Volta.
