| No Video I purchased a new EVGA GTX470 (for STARCRAFT 2 ). So I put my old video card (7800GT) in his GigaByte AM2 board. This machine just had on board video. Being the moron I am I thought this board would work with any PCI-X. Start the machine up and no picture! So I take the vid board out thinking I need to turn the on board video off in the bios. Now, no picture, post. nothing. Just fans that spin up. The manual has a very select list of video board it will support. Something that it runs in 1X?
It is a Gigabyte GA-M61VME-S2. »www.gigabyte.com/products/produc···=2439#ov
Is the mother board toast? |

| reply to dsless dsless,
If as you say the motherboard only supports a PCIe video card in 1X mode, then you have to set the BIOS video to PCIe 1X. You likely have it set to PCIe 16X now.
The PCIe 16x slot on the motherboard should then operate in 1X mode (emphasis on should). Make sure the video card is fully seated.

 | reply to dsless You did not get to the point that you installed any drivers for the card or anything. It simply wouldn't boot the first time?
When you took the card out the system will still not boot now?
What brand model of power supply? |
|
dsless join:2001-05-16 Pittsburgh, PA | The machine was running fine to I get put the vid card in it. The p/s is no name (450w) whatever came with the case. It was a budget build because just we purchase a new house. Thanks. |
|
 | reply to dsless It could be the board but I would also suspect that maybe the power supply was marginal and the extra power draw pushed it over the edge. If you can give any model numbers off the power supply sticker or tell us what brand/model case you bought I will try to find more info on the power supply. I'm guessing that the power supply has a few years of use on it. |
|
dsless join:2001-05-16 Pittsburgh, PA | That is an excellent idea. I could get a power supply and replace it. So you think the PS cpu rails could be fried? But the p/s does spin up. Thanks. |

1 edit | dsless,
I took the time to download (PDF) and look at the manual for your motherboard. The BIOS has no setting for selecting a PCIe running mode. The board apparently operates the PCIe video card automatically in 1x mode (actually x1).
Even so , I noticed that the card you installed is not listed on the compatible list. That fact doesn't mean your card isn't compatible. It's just something I noticed. It may or may not be a factor with your problem.
Make sure your BIOS is set so that the "Init Display First" is showing PEG.
Also, that your "Onboard GPU" is set to Disabled.
If you have those items properly set, You should at least be able to POST and also to at least boot in standard VGA mode, assuming no other issues.
If you manage to boot, you may have a video card driver conflict if you didn't delete the old card's drivers. You need to install drivers for the new card.
Post back on your reaction to this information.

| Thanks for taking time to read the manual. I put a new power supply in and had the same results. The cd/harddrive was unplugged as well as everything else. The video card was removed and only a keyboard was connected. I checked all the connections so I am kind of stumped. I usually can fix'em unless their fried. I needed a new P/s for another machine anyhow. I even tried a different monitor. Ideas? |

1 edit | dsless,
If you've set the BIOS as indicated above, and the video card is fully seated but still doesn't POST, then I'd think the card is not compatible.
You'll just have to settle for the on-board video, or try a different card. You might try contacting GigaByte support to see what they have to say about the compatibility question. We have no other way to make sure which video card is compatible, apart from that list of compatible cards. I'd think there must be other compatible cards since that list was compiled.
Freddy
Edit: In BIOS, PEG means PciEGraphics. |

| reply to dsless I got the drivers installed and the machine came up and recognized the 7800gt. However when I rebooted again the windows screen came up and then went black. Keep the ideas coming. Thanks to everyone for your ideas and help! |

1 edit | dsless,
Boot into Safe Mode to see whether that move gives you an idea of what the problem is. Note the message usually provided at the desktop. Also, in Safe Mode, check Device Manager for indications of a problem.
What drivers did you install?
Freddy |
|
dsless join:2001-05-16 Pittsburgh, PA | I tried those provided by Gigabyte and off of Nvidia's website. I also removed the on-board drives before install the vid card per the manual's instruction. Thanks. |

| dsless,
So, what's the status of the situation now? Can you boot normally into Windows, or did you manage to boot into Safe Mode?
It suppose you likely installed the correct video drivers for your operating system, but I have no way of knowing. Are you running WinXP?
Freddy |
|
dsless join:2001-05-16 Pittsburgh, PA | Yes I am running XP. It recognizes the card on boot, but after reboot the "starting windows" log comes and then the screen goes blank. |

1 edit | dsless,
Have you managed to try booting into Safe Mode yet?
To boot into Safe Mode, start your computer and press the F8 key repeatedly, during POST but before Windows starts to load, to access the Advanced Boot Options screen.
Freddy
Later Edit: Getting a blank screen when trying to boot can be caused by various things and can be confusing to find a fix. Here is a Microsoft article containing some ideas:

Also, you can use google to search on "windows XP blank screen on boot" (no quotes) to get additional ideas to try. |

| Thank you for the ideas. I was able to get the system to boot safe mode. I tried that several time. Every time I would try to boot 'normal mode', I would get the blank screen. I will try your ideas on the search. So much for the idea that every PCI card work in every slot. |
