| New program - monitor Agent on network
Found on the UD Member-to-Member Forum: UDStatsServer is a program written by Asciimonster that will allow you to monitor the status of the Agent on the machines in your network, from one computer. This saves you from having to go to each machine and bring up the Agent window to see its progress. You can download the program HERE. It installs and sets up easily. There are three files in the .zip - one for the "server", one for the "client", and a readme. Simply install the "server" on the machine you wish to monitor from, and the "client" on the others. This works on a simple peer-to-peer network. You put the address of your "server" (I use 192.168.1.XXX) into the program on each client, and hit "connect". Then the server program will show you every time each client saves the WU, the last interval, average interval, and number of saves. Pretty cool program, and, of course, the price is right. |

| reply to KeysCapt Sounds very interesting. If anyone decides to become the guinea-pig and run this can you let us know about it's stability, cpu usage and network traffic. Thanks for the info KeysCapt. -- Join us and find the cure for cancer. |

| Guess I should have mentioned that I installed and ran the program before I posted about it. In my task manager, the "server" shows as 468K, and Zero CPU %. The "client" shows 760K and zero %. There is a setting visible in the above graphic to minimize network traffic ... you can see that the author set it up to reduce traffic in later stages of the Agent. So far, no probs .... --------- One hitch, if you like: On the "server", you need to have both the client and server programs running, in order for the server screen to "see" the results of the Agent running on the main machine. Still, a small footprint, as far as I can see. |

| Here's another screen shot - I squeezed the window to make the graphic smaller. FYI - If you install the "client" program on the same machine as your "server" (this window), you need to identify your machine as "localhost" when setting up the client. No biggie, but worth mentioning. The readme file included with the program is fairly thorough. --------- Edit: Also worth mentioning - clicking on "minimize" on either the client or server puts them in the systray area; keeps your task bar uncluttered. | reply to KeysCapt I have installed and all is looking good so far. It certainly saves going around all the computers from time to time to make sure the agent is working ok. -- Join us and find the cure for cancer. |

| reply to KeysCapt I haven't tried it yet but I have a question: since it works through TCP/IP, would it also work for machines that are NOT on the same network?
In other words, could I put the server on my computer at work and monitor my home computers during the day just by giving the clients the proper IP address for the server? -- Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes. |

| ... not sure either. As long as your machines can "see" each other, both ways, it should work. Do you have a firewall, and if so, is it allowing the program? Check the settings on the client, and be sure they are set to the IP of the "server" and the name of the machine that the client is on, as recognized by your network. |

| reply to KeysCapt Now if IPs change a lot on whatever service you have (or if you have computers on dialup), would something like DNS2GO work to solve that problem? -- Join Team Discovery and find the cure for cancer! |

| I assume you're talking about remote networking, on the WAN side, ie: babacher's post? Good question. If you're on a dynamic IP, I would think that as long as your network was functioning, and the LAN IP of your "server" didn't change, the app should work. All it's looking for is an IP address that you set up ... if it's on your LAN, I guess it would be OK. But if your remote machine has a dynamic IP, I'd suspect you'd have some difficulty ... I'm gonna assume here that the author really intended this for a simple LAN, and beyond that, you're in experimental territory. |

| Yeah, that is what I was thinking on that. I set up DNS2go and it looks like it has the option to configure your selected name to your IP address automatically, even if your IP changes whenever. Looks good to use if you want to use that UD program with dialup. -- Join Team Discovery and find the cure for cancer! |

| reply to KeysCapt Well, it's not working on my little network.
With the server running, and the client set up correctly (named, and the server set to IP 192.168.0.2), clicking "Connect" immediately gives an error box saying "Windows socket error (10049), on API 'connect'".
I can't give the server a "name", because I don't use Netbios, only TCP/IP on my machines. I don't share anything, and I've been using Remote Administrator to manually monitor the other machines. It only requires TCP/IP to communicate via IP addresses.
It looks like a cool monitor program. I guess I'll have to contact the guy who wrote it to see if Netbios over TCP/IP is required to connect. |
