Industrial: at work we use an enzyme/sulfuric acid based one (Baktron?)
How does the sulfuric acid not kill the enzymes ?

Don't ask me, but I do know it is acidic and not alkaline.

Enzymes aren't alive, and some work optimally in an acidic environment (e.g. pepsin, an enzyme in our stomachs that breaks down proteins only at a low pH).

Kill, i.e. destroy, breakdown, deactivate.

And yes, our stomachs have enzymes and acids but those two happen to work well together. The one I responded about is used in combination with sulfuric acid. I suspect jrs8084 listed the wrong type of acid.

Why do you suspect it's the wrong type of acid? The enzyme itself doesn't care what lowered the pH, it just likes a particular pH. The pepsin in our stomachs would work just as well with any other acid, as long as the pH is in the proper range. I have no idea what enzymes are in the drain cleaner, but I'm sure they similarly are activated in an acidic environment.
