Re: Intel 82801AA Chipset Driver

The machine came with ME pre-loaded so I know the driver works...that is what I am running on now. I have 98 on another partition and I have a second hard drive awaiting XP. When I loaded the 98, plug and play did not find a driver for it and I did not know where to point it to. So, at this point I have no sound on the 98 side.

I have the cover off the machine so do you know if I can visually identify the chip and is there a way to determine what one of the CS drivers it uses??

Thanks

Joe P

on most systems I have seen, the sound chip should be right below the onboard sound. it looks like TriGem does use the Crystal sound. »www.trigem.co.kr/html/front/supp···;(SOUND)

they have both the sound chips listed. if you can take a picture of the board that might help, since I never have seen a picture of the board. It will probably be a small square chip infront of one of the PCI slots

Here is where I found it.
»e4all.freeservers.com/mobos/mobos3.htm
Crystal CS4299 & CA 4281
For Anahiem 3

Hope it works.

looks like the anahiem 3 board uses either the cs4281 or the cs4299. the only way to tell is to look at the chip. what is circled in red is the sound chip. Just look and see what version of the chip the mobo has on it.

Nice pic Onavi, where did you find that? Great Job. The site I listed has on driver(s) for that M/b. CS4281 and CS4299 are there

I found a site put up by an individual for eMachine help. The link is:

»e4all.freeservers.com/

At the top of the page is a link to "Motherboard Info" which will take you to a list of all eMachine motherboards in use. There you will find a link to the Anaheim-3 which has a color photo of the board. I think this photo is much better than any I can take because it is free of the cables and wires. I do have the capabilities of taking a picture with my WebCam if need be.

Additionally at that site is a driver download page which list the CS4281 and CS4299 for sound with the following notation:

The Anaheim-3 mobo can use either CS4281 OR CS4299 Audio chipset depending on version. Make sure which chipset your board uses.

I downloaded both now all I have to do is figure out how to install and uninstall the correct file. As I stated in my original post I tried another Crystal driver and it hosed the system. Not only did it not work, that driver is "stuck" in the system on the Win 98 side and every effort I made to remove it failed. My next move is to poke around the registry and see if I can "clean it out".

Remember that I have this device operating normally, with the correct factory installed driver, on the ME side if you can figure out how to "look" at that system and determine how to identify the correct driver.

Thanks again for your help!!!

Joe P

******OOPS!!!***********

After I got done posting this message I discovered that there was a second page to this thread!!!! I guess I went to sleep too early last night!!!

I went to that Trigem link and noticed that the CS4299 has the words AC97 AU?? next to it so that is a real strong indication that it is the correct driver. Do you agree??

YOU ARE 'DA MAN!!!!

I am lost for words...you hit it exactly!!! So, I took a look and found that it is CS4280 not the 4299 which is listed at the emachnie help site, the trigem site or the same number (4299) which was detected by the driver wizard. I don't recall finding the 4280, do you? Let me know what your thoughts are about using something other than the CS4280 found on the mother board.

When I first looked at the MOBO I was looking just in front of what you marked in the picture because I was looking for a "chip" in the sense that it would be a black colored raised piece. There was something like that and it had the following markings on it:

FW82801AA
F048??68
SL322
Intel '99
Phillipines

Well, its 8 a.m. and time to move on so I will check the thread tonight. Again, many thanks to you and "gunr" for all your help.

If it is a CS 4280 then here are two sites that have it.

The best thing I can recommend to get old drivers out of the way, is to remove all sound devices in device manager ( except the wave modem stuff ), reboot and let it rediscover it during windows boot. Let it determine it as an unknown device. Then install the new drivers.

Good luck.

  Thanks gunr...

I went to that site and downloaded both the driver file and the update. I was hoping that there were instructions for installation and removal in the zip but there were none. I did try to remove all assignments for the previously installed driver (which was incorrect) but before you can do anything it automatically loads the file again. so there must be some "trick" to cleanly uninstall the driver. I believe there are instructions on the site onvr found but it is not in english:

I tried several online translators but had no success.

What is your opinion about the differences in what the driver wizard found and the emachine site stated (CS4299) but what I found on the chip itself??

Thanks

Joe P

I think I would just try and install the driver you downloaded m( setup.exe after you unzip it. The number on the chip is usually the correct one. Vice the paperwork.

If you install the new drivers, they should overwrite the current ones, if they are identified the same?

Try that first. If that does not work, try the update drivers button in device manager, dont let it search for the driver, choose the have disk option and point it to the unzipped file location.

Gonna head home here in a few, will check your progress from there. Gotta go to Walmart see if they have ' Serious Sam the Second Encounter".

Since my last post I rebooted and switched over to the Win 98 side. I have not tired to install the driver yet because I have a much bigger problem at the time. For some reason I cannot connect to my DSL service!!! I am currently on dial-up. So, I have to do some playing with the modem and software because my provider checked and the line is clear.

With regard to the installation I was wondering if I point the software to the correct location would it find the files when it really calls for a setup.exe type launch to install?? It's not like I am pointing it to an INF. Now you know why I would love to have the instructions.

Well, I'm off to work on my DSL. I will check back later tonight.

Thanks

Joe P

you might wanna try this drivers:
they are for the cs4280, not the cs4299. on the site, they list the cs4299 drivers for your system, which are listed here:

maybe the cs4299 is just a newer version of the cs4280 since its asking for the cs4299 drivers. it couldn't hurt to try both sets. I would try the cs4280's first, since that's what the chip says

Look in the file where you extracted the files, see if there are inf files there. If so then you answered your own question, just point the driver update there. If not then run the exe file in the new driver folder, reboot see what happens.

onavi,

Do you have any ideas on how to get that information at the CS4280 Korean site?

I have not tried to load the drivers yet because I am still working on my DSL problem. I'll post the results asap.

Thanks
