whats with alltel?

last week my hi-speed was gone. i could hook up my alltel um175 direct to my computer and get some low,low signal . but in and out.
i spent hrs with tech to help with problem, they sent a new PRL to my modem that night and said they would call next day, next day came and they called and i was on the phone with a tech for 2 hrs,
were we did a bunch of stuff and he concluded that my modem was fried (um175) of course its over a year old, so i order one on eBay. 2 days later i pay my bill (which was on time) i didn't want to loose my supposedly no cap contract. then a few hrs later i have hi-speed internet again. now after 3 days without hi-speed and buying a modem i didn't need. i am puzzled.
any ideas what to do about it.

follow-up : after talking to alltel , they did make it up to me by giving me a month free serve. but it still puzzles me what happen.

Yep, same thing happened to me this weekend. Very slow speeds and had the modem dropping connection every few minutes. Thought that it was my 3 year old UM150 dying, so did an ESN change to my spare UM175. Same results. Looked at my amp and it was still on. Unplugged the amp and actually got better signal, but still very slow. Quicklink Mobile showed I was on 1X. Even updated the PRL and no improvement. Tonight I came home to find the internet more responsive, so started playing with the amp and hooked it back up and am now back to around 1Mb/s downloads with slow uploads. I have gotten as high as 1.2Mb/s down and .5Mb/s up. When the test below was done, I was not the only one on the home network. Also my nearest tower is over 6 miles away. Wish I had one closer, even offered to lease them 5 acres of land to build one. But since we are way out in the sticks it would not be practical for them to do so.

I would guess it had to do with the Alltel/Verizon transition of Wexford County but who knows for sure. We are getting great speeds here most of the time:
