Northpoint/MSN DSL Runaround

Here in Houston Northpoint is offering ADSL in conjunction with MSN for $39.99/month. I thought I might as well give it a shot. The phone company came out and handled the line on the outside of the house and MSN/Northpoint made an appointment to configure my computer. They showed up on time but had no ethernet card. So the techie proceeded to spend 3 hours in my house configuring his laptop (with an ethernet card) to work on my DSL line (he didn't seem to know much about what he was doing since he spent the entire 3 hours on his cell phone having someone talk him through it). When he was able to surf, he proclaimed that he was done. Ticket closed. I asked him what the hell I was supposed to do with my computer. He told me that I needed to call MSN, have them send me an ethernet card and then call MSN again and have them talk me through the configuration.

I have since installed an ethernet card but a dozen calls to MSN and Northpoint have not gotten me any closer to getting my computer configured to run on DSL. All I want are the configuration settings. I can put them in myself. But MSN says that is something I have to get from Northpoint and Northpoint sends me to MSN's tech support. Meanwhile my ticket has been "escalated" so many times that Bill Gates and the president of Northpoint ought to be seeing it by now. Can anyone supply me with the configuration settings that I need to put in so that I can bypass these clowns and get to surfing?

Could you give us a little more detail on your setup?
Computer specs, type of DSL modem that they gave you?
If it's the AresCom, I have the settings at home..

I'm running an old 200 MHz Pentium Sony Vaio. The router is an Arescom NetDSL 800.
Anything else you need to know?

ok, I can give you some settings.... I hope they work for you

Since the 800 doesn't provide DHCP for your internal LAN, you'll need to assign your NIC a static IP address. The router defaults to 192.168.1.1. (Assuming Windows 95/98) Make sure TCP is installed on your PC for your NIC.
Under the TCP properties for your NIC, check specify IP address.
Set your IP address for 192.168.1.2 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Click on the gateway tab. Type in 192.168.1.1 in the new gateway field and click add.
Click on the DNS tab and check Enable DNS. Fill in the host and domain (these can be anything, try me and mine)
Add the DNS servers. Try 216.230.97.30 and 216.230.104.132. Add them then click OK, Ok, and Ok to reboot.

That's all I have in settings as I'm only using the line and not the MSN software.

The phone number I got for Northpoint Line Sharing support is (877) 319-7619

You didn't get this from me.

I canceled speakeasy and applied msn last week. a NEW loop was delivered on this tuesday and it's already up and running this morning. i'm the lucky one with a total wait no more than two weeks. nothpoint brought me a Arescom NetDSL 800 bridge, it has been preset as a DHCP server and NAT. 13xx up, 108 down, 12k to co, ping sucks though, lots of hops.

just wonder how to get into the dsl modem, seems like that telnet has been blocked. I tried to telnet to 192.168.1.1, the login screen was shown up but qiulcky the telnet session was disconnected. it seems like that the modem was configured only allow the technician telnet once. any idea? how to get the password?

hmmm, I looked at the 800 manual and it doesn't say anything about acting as a DHCP server. The setup procedure in the manual shows a static IP setup for your NIC. The 1000 does do DHCP though.

Did you get the Arescom NetDSL software? You can access the modem with it. You might try calling the Northpoint number listed above. They may give you the password. What do you need to do with the Modem?

I just signed up for MSN DSL service and have a few questions. I was told by Northpoint that MSN uses a dedicated line and it is not a line share. But I see references to Northpoint's line share support number. Second can MSN be set up to support several computers to use the same account. From what I am reading you would not need a dsl firewall like the Linksys since the arescom router seems to perform this function. Do you need only to have a switch or hub to share the internet connection with several PC's.

Thanks

I've just had MSN/Northpoint installed, and have a small 2-pc lan. I find that, even with the Arescom NetDSL 800 modem plugged directly into the 2nd pc's ethernet card, the machine can't "see" it and obtain an ip address via DHCP.

This is the way it's supposed to work, so yes, you can share the connection in this manner. And yes, the modem will provide firewall services as your pcs are not "visible" on the net (although the modem itself is).

I'm finding it nearly impossible to get MSN or Northpoint to help me with either of these problems, however.

Again I don't have any equipment yet, but from what I have read in these posts the 800 series does not provide DHCP services. You might have to assign fixed ip address to each of your pc. See the post at the top from JYoung about how to set up your PC's.

Anon

Beg to differ, the 800 series does provide DHCP. The config app for the modem lets you specify the addresses it will use for this purpose. One machine gets its IP just fine, the other doesn't.

When the modem is removed from the net, my machine makes up its own IP nothing like the one it gets from the modem.

Skimming the 800 manual, I'm not convinced that the 800 does do DHCP serving for multiple PCs. You may be able to fake it out by assigning a static IP.....
If you have more than one PC hooked to the network with the Arescom, do both get valid IP address from it? (most likely 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3

Tried static IP addressing; get a communication failure trying to read the 800's configuration, though it does "find" the device. So something is wrong at a pretty low level. First step is just to get it working hooked directly into the pc's ethernet port (not on a multi-user LAN).

that won't work unless you are using an Ethernet crossover cable.
Have you tried hooking just the Arescom and the one pc in the same hub with no other devices connected to the hub?

ADD a linksys bsfr41. It does dhcp on both ends. It will get its IP from the arsecom and give the shared ip's to your computers.

Hi,

I found that my DSL connection speed varies from 56kbps to 900kbps. The slowest speed was experienced during 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Is this normal? Why it is not dedicated speed like the MSN claimed (768/128)?
I am using Arescom NetDSL 800. It is using USB port. Does anyone know why?
Thanks.

Nancys

Hey Nancy, the 7:00pm to 9:00pm usually is when everybody on Gods green earth is on the internet which can cause some slowing of your speed, but not that much what is your transfer rate when you are downloading any kind of file between those times?

Hi dslwhat,

From 7:00pm to 10:00pm, most of the time my DSL connection is extremely slow. I use the dslreports.com speed test server located at LA or SJC, CA to test it. I got down speed like 50+ kbps, or 300+ kbps or sometimes I got 600+ kbps. But it never went over 700+ recently.
For example, I downloaded IE 5.0 full version (64.4MB) from ZDnet.com at 10:23pm on 2/22. Its transfer rate varied from 3.52 kb/sec to 6.02 kb/sec. Most of the time it stayed at around 4.02 bk/sec. In the meantime, I used the test server to test my speed twice. I got these number: 300(down)/267(up), 350(down)/280(up).
Don't know what happened to my DSL line. Thanks.
