[FP-Ops] Foldy6 Blade2 (this one is for parkut)

Hey guys, hope you all are well.

I was inspired to move into action by two recent events. That would be ... my recent Team Helix anniversary and much more importantly the continued awesomeness of parkut.

I am in the process of setting up a new cruncher to add to Foldy6. It's a quad core system and I will be donating half to FP. The other half will crunch for me

I should note that this system has been sitting in my basement since around this time »[FP] Help GarG with Foldy6B

This is a two step process for me. So bear with me and help me when I need it (please).

First step is setting up the system in my home office and getting it crunching away on both Foldy6 blade2 and Gargoyle WUs.

Second step is setting up the new KVM switch I bought to connect Foldy6 blade1 and blade2 ... and my other personal cruncher together so I can manage all three and fit them into the space reserved for special boxes in my basement.

The process has begun ... setting her up now. Will let you know when I need help.

I think I have all 4 clients crunching now. Please check my config file to make sure I have them set up correctly. This one is from client 1 which is assigned to FP. Client 2 is FP. Clients 3 & 4 are for username Gargoyle. Other than that, they are all set the same way. Look OK to you?

Since you want to run four clients on this box, please make sure each one is configured with a unique machineid.

machineid=1
machineid=2
machineid=3
machineid=4

Looking fine as far as I can see. Thanks for being inspired.

I am going to let them run, as they are now, overnight to see if they finish and send in the WUs.

Tomorrow night I will start to try to figure out the fahtool script for these two new cleints and how to schedule the fahtool task. I am sure I will need help on this, but let me dig in first and try to figure out what I did for blade1's clients a long time ago. yikes!

Ah yes, Mr. Gargoyle, nicely done sir!

The uniprocesser client is not eligible for bonus, thus does not need the passkey. It won't hurt, but is not needed.

Yes, he could indeed. Use the fah6 client with smp -2 argument

The SMP client is much easier to run these days (heck, even I can do it) See my experience with XP at : »[F@H] My very first folding machine

I need to read up on the SMP client. But I think what you all are saying is that I should change all four clients over to the SMP config ... and that in doing this will get the maximum crunch from this quad core system.

[edit] Hmmmm ... now I am thinking you guys are saying I should run 2 SMP clients (not 4) ... one for FP and one for Gargoyle. These 2 clients would utilize 2 cores each. Yes?

That's it, thank you sorto!

So, we do have a new FP cruncher now running 2 console clients as Foldy6 Blade2.

I will read more about the SMP client and decide tonight if I am going to switch over to a single SMP client running on 2 of the cores.

After that, I will figure out how to get the new blade status displayed via Foldy monitor.

And then I will move the new blade into it's permanent home in my basement.

If you do decide to run SMP, it is really better to run only one. The bonus points were implemented to try to encourage donors to get each WU home as fast as they safely can, which definitely means one client running on all four cores is going to get dramatically higher points as a reward to reflect the importance PG puts on fast returns. This is because each new WU is built based on the previous ones. The faster we return them, the faster PG gets the end results they need to study.

If you want to move to SMP and want to share the box between FP and the Gargoyle account, consider running one SMP client for SMP for a month, then reconfigure to run for GarGles for a month, then back to FP. Like that ... but definitely run with a passkey. You have to return ten SMP WUs with that passkey successfully before the bonus points start.

Dedicating all four cores to one WU will definitely earn a bigger bonus than allocating only two. More than 2x based on the way the formula credits for fast returns.

Having said that, two cores are certainly capable of earning SMP bonus on the current WU's. See Foldy 7, blade 2 for example: »foldy.nozero.org/drop_box/data/F···Hlog.txt

I have read a bunch of stuff on the SMP client ... but when I saw that the Windows SMP (v6.30) Client Installation Guide says ... "Four cores or more are strongly recommended" ... it makes me think I shouldn't run two 2 core SMP clients.

I guess I can donate this whole machine to FP ... but I really want to up my Gargoyle contributions too. So, I need to think about this a bit. Will be back to you all later.

Since I'm hosting the only remaining dual-core foldy, I can tell you that there is an issue with the SMP client running on two cores. I think Stanford even says something about it. It doesn't seem to work as well as it should.

I would love to convert F2B2 into a quad core soon...

After sleeping on this, and reflecting on my TH anniversary and the awesomeness of parkut ... I decided that I am going to load the SMP client and see if I can get it working properly with 4 cores. If I can get it working (and Foldymon too) then I will leave this new box dedicated to FP.

I noticed my new KVM switch has 1 port not spoken for yet. So at a later date I will look for another box to dedicate to my own Gargoyle WUs.

I am headed out this morning and won't be back until Sunday afternoon. That is when I plan to get the SMP client working. Until then, the current config will remain crunching away.

Sorto is correct, the passkey is generated using both the username and e-mail. The key generation process is case sensitive, so a Capital@someone.com will generate a different key than caPital@SomeOne.Com

You should see a line in the log file that includes Passkey found:

[10:00:17] - Preparing to get new work unit...
[10:00:17] Cleaning up work directory
[10:00:17] + Attempting to get work packet
[10:00:17] Passkey found

Once that particular passkey has successfully turned in 10 work units, the machine will start generating bonus points. You can use the same passkey on as many machines as you wish.

posted a while back, but mostly relevant: »[FP] More points are GOOD for you and the team. Read below:

Update.

1) finished a WU in SMP mode completely

[11:31:29] Unit 2 finished with 91 percent of time to deadline remaining.
[11:31:29] Updated performance fraction: 0.914936

[11:32:49] + Results successfully sent
[11:32:49] Thank you for your contribution to Folding@Home.
[11:32:49] + Starting local stats count at 1

2) grabbed another WU and crunching away now

[11:32:54] Passkey found

3) Looks like there is one partial WU that can't be sent in. Probably was damaged when I started/stopped the SMP client several times early when trying to get the congfig correct.

When it tries to send it gets this msg "Server does not have record of this unit. Will try again later."

Tried 10 times and now "Could not transmit unit 01 to Collection server; keeping in queue."

Is there a way to "clean out" my local queue to get rid of this bad one?

Re: [FP-Ops] Foldy6 Blade2 (this one is for parkut)

As for the "stuck" work unit, Project: 10012 (Run 2959, Clone 1, Gen 146), Sorto checked to if it might have already gone home (It did not).

Sometimes the servers get confused, so it might not be your fault

If you decide you want it gone, it can safely be removed using the command line switches for fah6, as described in the wiki: »fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_k···ey_do%3F

You will first need to stop fah6 with control c

You will need to know the queue slot: -queueinfo

Instructs the client to write information to the FAHLog.txt file about any work units in the queue, and then exit. Positions are 0-9. Supported in client versions v3.x v4.x v5.x or v6.x

In addition to the usual client startup text, this switch displays information for each work unit in the queue. Data fields include the status (READY/FINISHED/EMPTY), originating server IP and port, date when the unit was received (local time in GMT), deadline date if the server sent that information, and WU Tag info.

Then you can delete it: -delete x

Deletes the work unit from position x in the queue. Positions are 0-9. This switch is usually not necessary, and is only to be used as a last resort when the only way to continue folding is to delete a work unit. Supported in client versions v3.x v4.x v5.x or v6.x
