| Could it be my modem
Well ive had the service since may of last year, and its been working great. But the last couple of months its really been degrading. Almost everyday i get horrible lag when i play games. And i get slow download speeds sometimes.
But there is one really strange thing. Some times when im surfing, all of a sudden the service just stops. All the lights on the modem are still on but it just stops working. So could it be the modem? Btw its a Motorola Sb3100 -- Arctic Warfare Magnum Power |

| reply to Iron Chef Iron Chef,
Try looking at the surfboard diagnostics by typing "http://192.168.100.1" in your browser's address bar. If your S/N is less than 30, or your signal is less than -10 or more than +10, you have a problem you should call them about.
Most likely, it's a network problem. But you can start there. |

| reply to Iron Chef Your modem problem sounds similar to the one I'm having now, except mine's a SB4100. Connection fails every few hours, and modem lights still show everything is fine. Connection does not restore itself automatically, have to unplug and plug again... which really sucks because I can't do that if I leave a server running and am trying to connect remotely!
When your connection fails, can you get to your diagnostics page? I can't, says page not found. When the connection is working, the diagnostics page shows everything is fine.
And this is modem #3... each one has same problem... just to prove it isn't my modem. (Tech support blamed my modem until I presented them with 3 different modems all failing.)
Multiple tier 1 and 2 tech support people have no idea what the problem is. I'm screwed. :-( |

When your modem fails and you cannot get to the diag page. Try manually setting your IP to 192.168.100.5 and a mask of 255.255.255.0. Could be that your ip is not renewing and you are losing it. That would keep you from being able to get to the internet and also not allow you to get to the diag page. If you manually set your ip to the above it will not mess with Comcast but will allow you to get to the diag page.
Oh, you do not need to set a default gateway as you will be in the same sub-net as the modem. And that is all you are trying to get to. |

| reply to Iron Chef Do you have Cable tv and does it die at the same time? If not have you tried just unscrewing the coax and screwing it back in? It might just be hick-ups in your cable system that's throwing you off and your internet can't re-sync like your cable ... just a suggestion. Give it a try. |

| reply to chuck1234 I have the same exact problems with the exact same equipment. I've performed the DNS modificatios listed on this site but to no avail the problem is still happening. "Lights on nobody home" The only thing that helps is a powercycle which like you say proves for a worless connection when trying to access the computer remotely. Does anyone have any suggestions!!! |

| I,ve gone through all that. I actually tried three different NIC's. Mind you I also at every switch would register the MAC at this address sas.r5.attbi.com and, which shows me that my account is fine. So back to the old drawing board. I'm now checking out the surge protector situation. I just hope it's something that banal. Quietly I am thinking that this is AT&T's way for congestion control due to the fact that this seems to be happening, most often but not always, when I am downloading a large file for an extended amount of time. |
