I don't know your system details, but on Windows 7 64 bit, I could never get MSE to work properly. I tried it for the sake of saying "I tried", but re-installed NIS 2012 within a week. -- "Be simple, be earnest and spread that simplicity throughout everything you do." |

Honestly I never trusted Norton to uninstall properly. In the past I have spent hours cleaning out the registry trying to rid my computer of Norton/Symantec entrees.
I run Win 7 64 on 7 computers and never had a problem with MSE and having read the polls and whatnot here I thought that MSE was a decent product. Maybe I will give NAV a trial and see how it works now. It couldn't have taken much to make it better than it used to be. Two days ago I spent (and billed for) 3 hours of manually uninstalling Symantec Endpoint Protection from a customer's server.
Repairing failed Symantec uninstalls is a familiar routine. I've been cleaning up after them since 1998 or so.
This cleanup was especially groovy because Symantec natively corrupts the network adapters with it's Teefer 2 driver.
There were no shortage of posts from folks who lost network connectivity after de-Symantec-ing their systems.
Note: For a Symantec Uninstall victim who can't get their network adapters reinstalled in the device manager and have this error
Class installer failed. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.
in their setupapi.log ...
One tested solution is here said by Sysinternals post 4 :Backup and then delete the REG_BINARY value 'CONFIG' (not the "network" key) from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network
You then restart the computer and either Windows will install the card automatically, or you will have to kick it off. If it is already in Device Manager, you may have to update the driver. NV

This was 2k3 and CW did function. I'd guess it saved me some time. However, it left behind a LOT of registry entries; including the references for the Teefer2 driver.
An hour of time went to restoring the NIC drivers and nursing some of the network services.
