Re: Hands free cellphone car kits

Anecdotal evidence and crash rates pre and post ban aren't material here. Because, they fail to take into account adoption rates and enforcement rates. Basically it's a 100 to 1 dangerous vs. harmless. So, I'm going to have to go with the vast majority of scientific researchers here. Sorry.

So real world statistics are not as good as placing someone on a timed obstacle course and having them race through it, all the while throwing things in their path that no one would ever see in a normal day? Having someone tail gate someone, only allowing them a few seconds to react is how all cell phone users drive?

If you say real world statistics are incorrect then how can you also go by those "studies"? Tell you what... find someone to give me $25,000 to conduct a study and I'll show you how talking on the cell phone is much more safe then sleeping. Truth is, anyone giving money "studies" has an agenda. What people _really_ need to do is _review_ the study itself and determine if it really translates into the real world.

I'll make it easier for people.... is this how you use your phone while driving:

WTF.... parallel parking while answering a quiz on the phone!!??? Yeah, I'm sure that happens all of the time!

If you want anecdotal evidence, I've got some. While being a passenger in a couple vehicles driven by a couple different friends [in their 30's] while on cell phones their driving ability goes right down the shitter. Drifting, fumbling, the whole 9 yds.

And, it's worse now, than it was a few years ago. One of them has a newish Samsung touchscreen smart-phone and it's voice dialing doesn't work, so he has to menu dive just to call a contact. WTF?

And, Mythbusters? I don't care what they do or whether it backs up my point or not. They are an entertainment program, and not much more.

So, maybe you've spent too much time as the driver and not enough as a passenger to observe how cell phone use affects attention and coordination. Try it.

I don't know why you call widespread statistic's "anecdotal" evidence.

As I said, I'm not advocating driving and using a phone. I'm just point out that these "studies" are obviously tainted and that current legislation is going to do nothing to curb cell phone usage. I can recall when they said the same thing about using radios in a vehicle. Why is it that we don't hear about this any more? What about punching in an address into a GPS? Why are their not GPS laws? It's because it's not going to get some lawmakers name in the paper.

What we _really_ need is youth education on how to drive properly. maintaining a safe distance means safe distance for the current conditions. When in traffic, when approaching intersections, when in adverse weather conditions... put the phone down. We need more common sense and less legislation on the matter. It's clear that legislation is _not_ helping. Those are simply "feel good" laws.

Question... when you are a passenger do you ask the driver to hang up the phone and not be on it while you are a passenger? If they refuse do you ask them to stop and get out? THAT is what you need to do to get your point across. I'm betting you never have to walk and instead the person hangs up the phone. Anything less and you are just allowing the person to drive poorly and no law is going to help the matter.

Yes absolutely... a friend doing BUSINESS not just casual (more intense concentration) call scared me driving with them in heavy urban traffic.
