| [COX] Digital/Cable TV-Cox? I let my wife talk me into us getting digital tv thru Cox. We had been on the old analog system, but there was some channel she wanted that was only on the digital system. Since she watches tv on the bigscreen in the living room, we only ordered one settop box. My question is this: I have a Hauppauge HVR1250 tuner card in my Windows 7 machine that I *used* to use to watch news while working on the computer. The card info states it does "ATSC/ClearQAM cable" plus the old analog NTSC. The Windows Media Center configuration shows a Cox/Digital entry when I give it my zip code. After setting it for digital, all I get is snow on all channels.. Am I going to have to get another settop box for this card? If the answer is yes, I guess I'll just yank the card and just get my news from the Internet... Help!!

| I think so.. I told the Windows Media Center that it was on Cox/Digital, with it previously on Cox/Analog. If thats not rescanning, I'm at a loss for how to do it..
Thanks for the reply..

|
 | reply to dfrandin what channel? cox probaly has it encrypted per channel owner request |
|
 | Obviously, the channel is encrypted. Otherwise, why would you have to order digital cable in the first place? Only way to view the channels without a box from Cox would be to buy some device with a cablecard slot. Think Tivo, Ceton, or Silicondust. There is no way to install a cablecard on a Hauppauge HVR1250. Usually, the cablecard itself is rented for around a few dollars a month from your cable company. |

 | reply to ilikeme You should still be able to get the analog channels as well, until they're turned off (which might be some time this year). Set the computer back to analog mode and you should be getting channels again, as a previous poster said. |

| reply to btB OP here: I was afraid of that.. Tried rescanning, just snow.. Apparently when you change to digital cable, they somehow remove the analog signal that we'd been getting previously. Oh well, just another reason why I'm going to be VERY upset with the wife for switching us. Apparently a Cox contractor came by last month with some "deal" on digital tv. Since I wasn't home, my b.s. detector was not able to sniff this "deal". But of course, wifey jumped right in, since those three little letters "H B O" were included. When the new fancy cablebox and wayyyy too complicated remote control showed up, I asked her what this was going to cost per month. She said that Cox had a special deal going where HBO was free for 3 months and somesuch b.s. AND that the monthly rate would only be $15 more than we were paying previously with basic/analog, preferred internet ($110/mo total). Just got the first bill.. $175/mo... Plus HBO was listed in the itemization at $15/mo. Had I been home when this Cox contractor came by this would never have happened. Guess Cox is getting desperate in getting us old farts off the old analog system.
Guess I'll be yanking the tuner card out of the computer since its apparently useless anymore.... |

| I'll check.. We only have hooked up currently the main tv that the wife watches with the settop box, and my tuner card in the pc. There is another tv in the bedroom that hasnt been used in quite a while, I'll fire it up and see if it still sees the old analog channels..
Thanks |
|
 | I looked into that a while a go. You probably need to set the card to ntsc for analog. |

 | reply to dfrandin again I'll ask what channel is it? |

 | reply to dfrandin Some time ago I asked Cox support about getting the digital signal on a device other than the rented set-top box. I figured that after a certain number of months, the device would pay for itself in rent saved (but I still have not gotten one).
The gist was that there are other receiver devices than the ones Cox leases, but Cox has to 'activate' the device on its network. Of course, the device would have to be compatible with Cox' network. I believe the Cox' Scientific Atlanta Explorer set-top box we rent works like a cable modem--I saw a settings page and copied down a MAC (EMAC) address and an RF IP address, so I think of it as a computer specialized for video, and I think that the activation process is needed so the data can be addressed to it.
The Cox channel lineup for this area has in the footnotes, "except TV sets with a Clear-QAM digital tuner will receive local broadcast channels without equipment rental". Maybe a TV tuner card with Clear-QAM still has to be activated even just for local channels? |

| reply to dfrandin my setup is I have 3 computers I use to watch TV. I use a cable card in each @ $1.99 a month so its less than one settop box. I have 2 of the ATI external units and I ceton 4 tuner internal card. I get everying thing that the set top box on the main TV gets. I use the Windows Media Center to accomplish this. |
