Re: Lawful Access articles - collection A while back, Steve was intereiwed on a vancouver TV station along with a chief of police. It was quite interesting because the chief of police explained that they needed to move with the 21st century, but gave the impression that it was quite OK to require warrants.
So I do not think that police forces are the ones wanting warrantless searches. |

I think pressure is coming from south of the border. or perhaps Ottawa wants to please south of he border so much that they volunteer to take away our rights, a bit like a sacrificial offering. |

Well if it isn't the police, who is it? Of course it's the police (well they are one force behind this). When this was known as the MITA ACT (you can google "MITA"), it was the cops requesting it. Over the years it changed names to "lawful access".
I don't know where JF gets some of his info, but he can also research MITA.
On a another note, Open Media (you know them JF?) posted info showing the cops are scrambling now to help pass this.
Partial copy/paste from Geist's site:
Open Media has now obtained an internal police document that shows the policy recognize this problem. The email asks police departments for examples of why the current laws on disclosure of customer name and address information has posed a problem. The email acknowledges that "we are aware that a similar request was made approximately 2 years ago, but the report written at that time lacked a sufficient quantity of good examples."
See: »business.financialpost.com/2012/···ss-laws/
On the subject of MITA for JF: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernizat···ques_Act
MITA required that the likes of Bell (all telecom) keep an interface where the cops could be a "man-in-the-middle" for anyone at any time. DPI machines are a step in this direction.
About 5 years ago (+/-) CAIP used to have a notice on their site to their members about it.
Part of it was how the likes of the resellers would have their customers data mined for them by Bell (this was in the MITA ACT). Money given by the gov to help it along etc.
When DPI popped it's ugly head, for the privacy advocates out there it was more than just a throttle. The issue of the throttle was useful to rally people. The real threat and real target of this was as detailed on CAIP's website and on the gov website.
Search the Bell forum, this forum and the tsi forum for MITA. Ask CAIP if they still have a copy of the notice. Find the part about how the resellers customers will be mined and backdoored for them by Bell Canada.
Once you find all the info, ask yourself if the cops had nothing to do with it (as you find the RCMP and Ontario cops demanding it to parliament)? Ask yourself if a lot of these groups and people attacking the throttle were only targeting the throttle and not the implications to MITA? |

jfmezeiPremium join:2007-01-03 Pointe-Claire, QC kudos:22 | This isn't contrary to what I am saying. Police needs access to ifnormation and spying ability, but do not mind reuiring court authorized warrants just as they do for any other type of spying.
There may be some folks at the top who have been pressure to find reasons to have warrantless wiretaps. But I don't think this warrantless tapping has come from grass roots in the police forces. |
