DNS issues to sprint.com

Was trying to connect to the sprint.com site tonight and experienced some rather strange redirection.

Let me preface by saying that I experienced the same redirection when using my cell phone with the wifi connection.

No changes have been made to the router in many months (possibly years). Same redirection was experienced on a brand new machine with fresh windows install, so it's not localized to one particular pc.

Going to sprint.com would redirect to hxxp://pagesinxt.com/?dn=sprint.inq.com&fp=IE%2Fh3rltb6QD%2FtQIVOnMXajALbqN%2FtZe%2F87XFC49bN1ey6DWudTgx9lr%2BbY%2B184QBIQH7V68SwdnOAypnNQXRg%3D%3D&prvtof=MBt0FgIbx0ZbL%2BGaQQf5lNWfDIWonEBdurMm0Q2Wd2xqW6tUUONegzQFWhKu35WzO%2B%2BrFP%2Bdq8TfRveErMPr%2Fv5lgtfHPQ5Y2LDOysHzfDc%3D&poru=iNzHdrx4lNy9Jm0ZI21DGhhqGLC5klXYhAs2ab2oYsRHg%2B1Pj0fb3SWlv%2BuP%2Fa3bk5UhCY3QWHsku7Mgnb9d1LNXmtIBMU8ibvdZIDYGBVs%3D&cifr=1&flrdr=yes&nxte=js

Obtaining different public ip addresses does not seem to fix the problem. I highly doubt my router has been compromised. Changing to different dns (4.2.2.2 for example) does not fix this.

Can some folks try going to sprint.com while on the rcn network and see what your results are. Going to sprint.com while on a non rcn network seems to work just fine.

EDIT: I tried some other public dns such as google (8.8.8.8). After clearing the dns cache and deleting history/cookies, this seems to have fixed it.

However, if I reconfig with the rcn dns, then the issue returns..

Re: [Connectivity] Strange redirection

Just to rule out..have you done a hard reset of the router?
Does it occur on other sites..or just that one/ just http or https as well?

How about an encoded mac?

Edit: WOT is none too pleased with that site, so I've hashed it so people don't unwittingly click on it
Also my a/v went off with bells & whistles. If you'd truly like to rule out, just for peace of mind - I'd run thru the steps here:

»Security Cleanup FAQ »Mandatory Steps Before Requesting Assistance

..it's easy, just copy/paste the following into your post (in order):

the contents of the MBAM log (Step 2)
the contents of OTL.txt (Step 3)
the contents of Extras.txt (Step 3)
the contents of checkup.txt (Step 4)
the contents of the ESET Online AntiVirus Scan log (Step 5)

..and start a thread in that forum: »Security Cleanup

We see redirected search results often, so better safe than sorry.

Also looks like it redirects (albeit briefly) to inq.com / »www.aboutus.org/Inq.com#redirectory-

When I go to www.sprint.com I automaticaly get transfered to Inq.com. What is going on with Sprint?

Re: [Connectivity] Strange redirection

Of course the router was rebooted. Several times in fact.

It appears to only happen with http, not https. Thus far limited to that one site.

Encoded modem mac: b7a545ab886180d51275148a594e2fc37481b416

Given that this issue is not localized to a pc or several pc's, but occurs on my phone (android based). I would think the issue is somewhere else in the chain.

Changing DNS back to 4.2.2.2 (level3.net) no longer redirects.

Only after I change back to the rcn dns, does this redirection occur. In between the tests, dns cache is being cleared and browser restarted.

^^Good find! I only discovered this last night. So looks like it's not quite an rcn issue

Re: [Connectivity] Strange redirection - N Chicago

Let's get this over to the Sprint forum..I think it might fare better there as it surely must be affecting quite a few people.

Re: DNS issues to sprint.com

How are you connected to the internet? Are you using sprint mobile broadband (3g/evdo)?

If so your DNS is most likely being blindly proxied to sprint's dns servers no matter what you set as your dns servers.

Just to update here:

Jan 27, 2012

Access to Sprint.com

Good day -- we have isolated the issue to a DNS change that was made by one of our partners (INQ) and failed, resulting in the DNS record pointing their systems to the offending site. The change was backed out at 8:36 PM last night, but due to the way DNS works, it will be up to 24 hours before all customers stop seeing the redirect.

We are monitoring DNS servers nationwide to ensure the change is appropriately propigated and are meeting with the vendor and DNS provider to identify the root cause of the failure and put corrective action in place to prevent this from happening again.

This change does not impact billpay, view bill etc.

Customers with issues with site speed or stability should contact customer care and have them log a ticket for the IT teams to investigate.

Thank you,

Will (Sprint Forum Admin)

Glad it doesn't affect their bill pay
