I guess it might be a good price. It may be a rare shark fin and you can get a lot of money for the soup.

Take a look inside and see if you can find a limited edition number and a certificate of authenticity

It depends on what kind of modem he had. Those Motorola CyberSurfer (non-docsis) modems really do cost them $600-650 each. No lie..

they also charge 49.95 for a network card that may or may not be brand-new out-of-the-box. Their justification is that they're also delivering this nic to your door, even though a tech is coming out anyways to install your service(which they're charging 49.95 for anyways; assuming its not a promo).

$100-150 is still too much

You can find them for less than $100 on Ebay!

AT&T is smoking major crack. They need to lay off the Monopoly Cigars® they've been inhaling.

Re: hand made...

Actually, these Shark Fin modems are discontinued units from 3Com that you could by in the store for $150 to $199 dollars, so no, at&t has no grounds for charging $650 for it.

may or may not be handmade

but just like you said, you must pay the original price of a missing movie from a movie store

because they have a special license

im sure these modems have some sort of fcc license

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but often times, AT&T specifies that it is their responsibility to pick up the modem. If they never do, then are you liable?

I also understand that most people aren't home during the day when tech's are out installing new modems and collecting old ones, so this is kind of a grey area....

Think about this. If you lose a movie from a video store you have to pay the 89.95 suggested retail cost.

If you lose a book from the library you have to pay the suggested retail cost.

You could go to a discount store and buy these items cheaper. This is how companies ensure that they will get their return on their investment if a customer loses or breaks it.
