tis true

I cancelled my service with ATT some 8 months ago, but no one ever showed up to pick up the equipment. I had both Internet and digital cable TV with ATT. About a month ago I got a bill for $1,600. I was like what the? I called them up and the customer care person told me that all of the charges were for the equipment. I was so shocked. I too had the shark fin modem. I guess that’s ATT for you!!
To solve the problem, just return the damn thing even though it’s their job to come pick up their stuff to avoid these charges.

Re: tis true

Most states have a $500 minimum loss, for a company to file a felony theft charge. This amount varies however so I would say that out of all of there service areas the highest necessary loss was $650 dollars. So in order for them to file a felony theft charge against a customer that skips town with there product they would need to value the modem at $650. This is also related to the fact that you can not effect a person's credit rating for merchandise that was at one time rented but not returned. So the only legal recourse is to either bill you for the amount of the modem, $150, and have them skip town and only be able to file a misdemeanor which does not follow you through life or charge the value of the felony. This felony idea is to increase the odds of getting the merchandise back, NOT TO GET THE MONEY. So as long as you are a honest person and return your modem you will never have a problem.

Hmm, when I cancelled my digital cable and later my cable modem, I had to return the equipment to the local center. When I was in college and brought home the cable box at the end of the semester (I finished finals before the cable company come on campus to pick up the cable boxes) I was charged for the box and had to drive up to return it.

The idea here is that if AT&T (or any cable/broadband provider) makes it a pain in the arse to cancel service, you are less likely to go through the trouble to do so. If it was a matter of calling to cancel the service then leaving the equipment on the front step for the cable guy to come retrieve, they probably would've lost more customers when the added that annoying TV Guide thing at the bottom of your screen when you change channels.
