Does this router have a sip alg?

I have access to wireless internet provided by Brighthouse through a Netgear CGD24G Wireless Cable Modem Gateway. My softphone configured to voip.ms works but I am not sure if its working because theres no sip alg or if voip.ms is "fixing it" on there end to make it work. Unlike my 2wire, this router doesn't have a page showing the active NAT sessions or anything else useful.

Is there an easy way to test if the router is mangling sip packets?

With nearly all SIP ALGs, the Via header received tag (as received back at the softphone) will show your private IP address.

You could also turn off NAT in the CGD24G, making it a simple modem and use an external router.

But if it's working, why are you concerned?

Not really concerned, I did turn off the "firewall" feature though, I read somewhere that it could cause issues. I don't at the moment see the need for the router to be doing any stateful packet inspection.

Note that even if it does have SIP ALG you can bypass it by setting your incoming SIP port to something other than 5060, and connecting to your provider at a port other than 5060 (that of course requires them to make that option available).

We've had a couple of people recently who had problems with SIP ALG they couldn't turn off because they had no control over the router. Just changing the ports fixed all issues.
